I've never really calculated hab (nor would I really know how to) or spent much thought on it but usually I chose my hab values by intuition.
One thing I always wondered about:
What kind of hab is needed to gain 2% improvement for 1 terraform or even 3%?
Is it directly proportional to the hab width? Shortening the hab to only 1/3 will gain you about 3% terra-improvement, 1/2 hab width 2%...? Somehow I imagine it's not that easy...

The hab vlaue calculation is far from simple (link) but 1 pt of terraforming IS a 1 "click" improvement, so yes there's much greater reward for narrow habs.
