Do you still use chaff even once you have ships with 70-90% jamming? I mean, i just dislike being limited at warp 9:\

and what am i supposed to use to shed chaff late game..should i continue using the outdated range 3 weapons? or would you recommend using a faster speed gatling equipped one?

edit: i get the feeling i've asked this before..and people said to stick to range 3 for the earlier fire turn.
also; how do players tell how many of each mineral class are in their empire as a whole? Joseph had some way to get planetary data ripped into an excel..which would be useful for me i think

Regarding the use of chaff vs. jamming on ships, I pretty much just use chaff and don't bother taking up slots with jammers. Chaff are not only useful as chaff, but also greatly increase operational mobility by enabling you to chaff sweep MFs. Regarding being limited to warp 9, the QJ5 engine will go warp10, you just lose some of the chaff while doing so. Remember that chaff are meant to be destroyed so make them cheap, make lots of them, and don't hesitate to expend them. (NOTE: Well, don't just lose them to no purpose. For instance, before going into battle do a calculation of the number of missiles/turn your opponent will be firing and don't bring more than three turns worth of chaff to the battle since anything beyond that will in all likelihood simply be killed by your opponent's beamers.)

I usually use some jamming, unless I am trying to counter a specific design. If you don't, you run a risk of having your chaff negated in a battle.

Take a recent battle in a game. Using sappers, I was able to drop the shields on an opponents stack of BB's in the first combat round. At that point, his BB's became more attractive to missiles than his chaff.

You should simulate a battle against a couple dozen heavy missile ships. First with highly-jammed ships only, then with light jamming and chaff. See how you like the results and the expenditures for each case. Twisted Evil

For me a "standard" jamming on ship hulls is one slot of jammers. Everything else looks to me like a waste of a slots, because stacking jammers isn't stright cumulative, and I usually have better use for that additional slot.

Take for example a BB with its 3+3 elec slots and one front slot. Using 3+3 jammers makes this BB simply underpowered vs. a design with 3 jammers and 3 capacitors or 3 computers. Using 3+1 in a beamer makes it too slow (no man-jet), or in missile ship with too low init and accuracy vs. a design with 3+1 comp's.

About the same goes with a Nub hull. Here the additional slot of jammers doesn't make so big a "dent" in available slots, but the opponent that has only 1 slot of jammer can use the other slot for deflectors (sustaining 33% more beam damage), computers (firing first), capacitors (dealing 33% more damage), or man-jets (moving faster, using lighter machine). And he still can use chaff to survive first and second round of missile fire, while his advantage comes into play.

Even with chaff you go W-10 when needed. You lose 10% of it, but you win a battle. Just a price of playing Stars! Wink
