Heya all ive just started playing stars! again after bout a 2 year break from it (the itch realy doesnt ever leave i guess), and im having some problems with my race play style. When i begin a Testbed my first 4 turns are factory building which gives me enough resorces to research Prop2 and Concstruction4 in 3-4 turns. After that i build 20 scouts and 200mines. Total is bout 10 turns run through. My question is though since my population on my homeworld is already over 450K, so should i still exsport down to 25% until that is all developed or hold at 33% since ive already got the larger population?
Currently im so rusty i cant even get 5k at 30yrs mark although the last one was improved to 4200 at 30yrs.

I know this is an old message, but I think I have a few more thoughts to add.
If you have needs for pop, and places to put them that need to grow, then I would export the pop.
But note that the actual number of pop generated when worlds are at those levels may be important.
From a Joat (OBRM) test bed I have:
25%, 330K pop - new pop is 62.7K/year
33%, 440K pop - new pop is 66K/year
50%, 660K pop - new pop is 55k/year
So you are actually generating slightly more pop on your HW if you stay at 33%. Of course you have more resources as well for building and research. The extra pop generated per year will not equal what you could have taken off (unless you leave the planet at 33% for 30 years...) but I always thought the pop generated dropped at 33%, which is does not. The effective rate drops, but since the base pop is higher so is the result.
If you export then you have that 110K (in my Joat example) to help build the resource base on other planets. This can help your long term growth.
In my case, I like to keep my HW (and any local breeders) at 25% until I have 100K pop on all green planets. I do not like to stall my exporting for 2-3 years while I build up the extra pop on the HW. I am re-thinking this as it would sometimes provide me with extra resources for research or war buulding (if I am in a war...). And once I have all local greens to 100k pop (or more as early planets would have grown by the time I get the smaller ones to that number) then I can probably spare a few more turns to get my breeders to 50%.
Of course when to go to 50% is not the original question...

I understand that well. I had forgotten how much there is to forget. I have been back for a few months now, and I finally feel like I am getting a handle on most of the finer points, though I expect it will take a while longer to get back to my best.
