Turn based games to try / which order?

I first bought stars some 9-10 years ago and haven't played any decent/modern Turn based strategy since. I brought Starships 'Unlimited' and was whole heartedly disappointed, then tried GalCiv I & II and became shocked few had emulated the customisations on stars. I've looked around and there seem to be several similar turn based games, I'd like to start off with the worst and then try the best ones (so not to get spoiled)

Here's my list:
1. Ascendancy
2. Spaceward Ho!
3. Master of Orion II (I hear 3 was worse!?!)
4. Sword of the Stars
5. Space Empires IV
6. Space Empires V
7. Armageddon Empires

Any other recommendations?
Suggestions on order to try them?

Alpha Centauri is a good one....probly the best from the Civilization series, but its not galactic conquest.

fallout tactics: squad turn based ground shooter
massive assault, dominion, m.a.n. network, galactic assault: division turn based ground warfare

all work with xp
and are available via torrent

Wesnoth is a fine turn-based game:
http://wesnoth.org/
It's free, it has very good AIs and a community you can play against online.

It's no Stars!, though, which is still quite unique with the exciting mixture of race design, economy and strat/tact.

If you can find it and get it to install on your comp Emperor of the Fading Suns by Holistic is a killer galactic turn based strategy game.
It's abandonware so you can find a rip of it if you want. It's just so much better with the gothic music and extra anims that they ripped out to pack it down.
Just don't get caught researching those nasty banned techs by the church. They'll send their inquistors after you!
