Experience: Beginner (has played no more than 2 games)

# Players: 4-5

Universe: Small. Density normal (4 players) or dense (5 players). Average # planets per player = 32.

Other Game settings: Positions = Distant, Beginner Max. Minerals, ABBS, Public Scores appear in 2450, Galaxy Clumping.

PRTs ALLOWED:
CA (must leave 150 RW points set to defences)
JOAT (must leave 50 RW points set to defences)
IS, SD, IT. (no penalty)
i.e the races that are easiest to handle for beginners.

VC: winner by majority agreement among active players or player ranked #1 in 2480.

Diplomacy: Normal - this is a much under appreciated aspect with beginners so I don't want to discount it (but see below).

Special Rule: From 2450 onwards the player ranked #1 CANNOT have allies & all agreements made by that race will be rendered void. If an alliance agreement exists at the time a player is forced out of it by this rule then an automatic 5-year NAP between the previously allied players comes into force (that means that the NAP still exists after 5 years & that first possible battle occurs in the 6th year).

No cheats other than chaff (it's important that a beginner gets a good handle on that) & split fleet.

Gen Schedule:
Daily or MTWTF if anyone has a problem with weekends. After 2420 any request to slow down to 50 hours max or MWF will be granted.

I am looking for a 3rd party to critique the player's race designs so that noone starts the game with a broken race.
Joseph has volunteered - thank you Joseph. Players should send their race file to Joseph by PM or at josephgliddon AT hotmail DOT com

PLEASE DO NOT join this game if you are likely to drop when things get tough.

NOTE: Effluvient Walrus suggests that 100 RW is an insufficient penalty for a CA. He is right (200-220 would be normal I think) but since this is a game for beginners I don't want to go that far - I've increased it to 150 RW. A JOAT would normally attract a penalty of around 100 RW but I've set it to 50 RW for the same reason.

Player List
Beanspoon
Effluvient Walrus
Airny
Factor
Tibia

GAME FULL. If more beginners want to join I'll post a 2nd game.

Send your final race file to me at mcdonaldjk at bigpond dot com. If you put a password on your race file let me know what it is.

CORRUPT RACE FILES
If you create a race file & then change your race name you will probably corrupt it (it's a bug) so the easiest thing to do is either don't change the race name or write down the design & recreate the race file.

I'm in, if noone else wants the last spot. Given it's a reasonably small game and my other beginners game seems to be in limbo.

I will volenteer to critique the player races.
I love race design me, a flaw I have is Im not fond of HP style races - but with this universe they dont want a HP anyway.

I will also include a brief "what you should be trying to do with this race is..." if you think thats a good idea.

I am pm-able and if that doesnt suit then Alex has my email.

I have been playing for a few years and am willing to help critique player race designs. Please send your race files to dk20rl at gmail dot com if you would like some advice.

For new players, I suggest that you stay away from -f, HP, and other unconventional race designs for now as they are harder to play. The standard/conventional HG race designs are the most forgiving race designs to play.

My races designs are not as innovative as those of other players. They tend to be conservative, but they are playable usually Smile

We have 5 players so the game is now full.

If 4 or more extra players want in then I can set up a 2nd game so I'll leave the thread open for a while to see if that is so.

Joseph & Orange have both volunteered to critique the race designs. I know that both are fine players but Joseph responded first so if you could PM your race designs & any race PW to him thay would be great. Thanks to both Joseph & Orange.

Once final designs are settled & sent to me I will generate the game. If noone dawdles too much I expect that to be a few days to a week.

The final step is for Ron to set up the game at AH & that typically takes a few days. Once up & going Ron will send you your files, a link to the game page & a PW for up/downloading your turns. I will provide more instructions on procedure at that time.

If you are doing a second game, count me in Very Happy

I've only been in 3 games, and one of those FUBAR'ed out.

Right - so far I have seen one race (and will be having a look at V2 of the race this evening).

If any others want their race reviewed either pm me or

My intention with Joseph's race critiques is to ensure that everyone has a good race design since one of the big problems with beginners is that their race doesn't perform & that leads to reduced fun for the player & even a tendency to drop.

Joseph is very good at race design & it is highly likely that he can suggest improvements to whatever you design. Of course it's your race so noone is going to force you to make changes if you don't want to but IMO you'd be crazy not to at least hear his comments before you make such a decision.

So roll up, roll up & get the good oil from Joseph.

If, aside from having fun, the objective of this game is for beginners to learn as much as possible, how about some delayed coaching while the games goes on. It is generally better to get feedback 2 weeks later than 3-4 months later when you have forgotten why you did as you did.

By 'delayed coaching' I mean giving players feedback on turns 5 turns older than the turn currently being played. Players should make their own decisions not influenced by anyone and you wouldn't want some mentor's advice to influence the game too much, hence the delay.

If you think it's a good idea, I won't mind to try and act as 'coach' for one player.

FYI - If anyone is interested in looking at good races designed by experts, there are many race designs of all types in the articles on race design on the Stars! wiki

http://wiki.starsautohost.org/wiki/

I also available as a coach for one player who is interested - same conditions as above except for discussions of general strategy and tactics.

I sent my race design, but it's corrupted, so I'm trying again. I read somewhere about the file being corrupted sometimes but didn't really understand it =/

Also see the game post above - I mentioned it, said what the usual cause was + how to avoid the problem. Confused

About delayed coaching:
Excellent!! However I feel that if 2-3 players have a coach and the others don't that would be unfair. So if we can get a coach for all 5 player (less anyone who doesn't want one) let's do it.

So we need 3 more coaches if we can get them.

My goodness, we may have created 5 cadres here - watch out next time you see them you guys! Rolling Eyes

I have now seen and replied to 4 races.
Some are ready to go - some are still thinking about things.

Looks like this could be an interesting game.
Oh and I will coach someone - however dont tell me who yet.

I've now received 3 final & legal races as follows:
Effluvient Walrus (race file in)
Airny (race file in)
Beanspoon (race file in)

Awaiting Factor & Tibia.

I'm still looking for 2 Intermediate or above players to coach a begginer.
