Ok, bear with me - I've been out of the loop for a long time. I came across the shareware version of stars I think about 5 years ago. Since then, I've been searching the web for some mention of the game (perhaps where I could find a full version). For some inexplicable reason, my searches were fruitless, apart from a couple of angry forum posts in random places from about 1995 asking where the serial code could be found. Then, one by one, they vanished. I thought it was gone forever - that somehow I was the only one who remembered this mother-of -all-strategy-games!

Today, I had a last-ditch attempt to find it, and here it is! I've got the new version, and found my fellow stars players! I'm so happy!

But what I want to know is this: what happened to the fuel?
I enjoyed the limited fuel supplies you were given in stars 2.0, and the only way to keep your ship running was to colonize or use ram scoops! It made the strategy that much more difficult! So where and why did it go?

Mining for fuel was removed ages ago. Now Space Docks (only available with the Lesser Racial Trait (LRT) Improved Space Docks (ISB), the Space Station, Ultra Station (only available with the Lesser Racial Trait (LRT) Improved Space Docks (ISB), and Death Star (only available to Alternate Reality races) all simply fully fuel any of your or allied (set to the race relationship of Friend) ships in orbit. While this does remove some of the strategic complexity from the game it does remove much of the micromanagerial complexity from the game, which IMO was a significant improvement to game play.

So, congrats on finding us and Welcome!
Multi bounce

In addition to being able to find lots of information here, you can also find downloads of the now standard Stars! version jrc4 and access to valid serial numbers.

Thank you for the warm welcome! Lol I feel so out of touch...

Do you think the versions with finite fuel and resources are still available? I get nostalgic - I was playing version 2.0 until I found this site. Call me weird, but I liked the challenge when you realised you were running out of resources and had to get them in from elsewhere...

Not that I'm knocking the new version at all - I've already checked it out and it's awesome. I love all the new features they've put into it!

My into to stars came to me in a game collection on CD... (that was the one with limited fuel) I do not have the CD any longer (my son took it back to Canada with him)... I wish I did...

If you locate the original version I would certainly appreciate a copy for my archives.

dj

I've asked Micha if there's any possibility of sending them to me. I originally found the shareware stars 2.0 on a games collection CD as well - it was Games, Games and more games Vol 1 if I remember rightly...I've still got that version, but being a shareware version, it's a bit annoying to have to stop at level 10.

Sooo...now my exams are over and I'm waiting to see if micha can send stars to me by e-mail, what can I do...

STARS! W00t!

I'm amused...

beanspoon's arrival prompted me to stop procrasinating about it, so I finally added the release notes for each of the upgrade patches.

The amusing bit:

Many of the formulas we've been haggling about for years are included in the 2.0b-2.5 patche release notes. Laughing

I have one thing to say...

HOORAY FOR ME!!!

Aren't you glad I joined now! On a slightly sadder note: the wiki download is unfortunately the shareware version. It was the full version of stars 2.0 I was looking for, I have a serial key.

I don't really mind about finding the old version now though, I have been asking questions on the academy forum and have found that minerals are not infinite as I first thought, but apparently the density decreases over time, so you end up hardly being able to mine anything at all. That's cool with me, as long as the danger of my economy crashing and burning is still there and very real, I'm happy. =)

I'm so glad that I've finally found my bretheren in the world wide web. I really did believe I was the only one left, and it's difficult to spread the faith with a game like this. All everyone wants today is better and better graphics. My friends and even my brother cannot understand my love for this game XD

Anyway, thanks everyone for your help in trying to find an older version, I think I'm more or less over the nostalgia now. There are things I am going to miss, and I've found it's still very easy to let your ships run out of fuel on the new version =P (I bet you're beginning to wonder if I'm massarchistic). However, if anyone DOES happen to find that they own or know the whereabouts of an older version, I am still intersted...

Well poo...I'm going to have to find another 2.0b version to put up now Very Happy

And yeah...I thoroughly sympathise with you efforts to recruit players...in the 6 or so years I've been playing I've only managed to convince 2 people to play, and they're next to useless as opponents for me cause they're, well, crap at it and woefully out of practice.

Never mind, I've decided I like version 2.7 more now. So I'm happy. I'm suprised at the response I've had for this topic, I must seem a bit of a blast from the past with all my forgotten ways.

Anyone who wants to discuss the old games and the things which have changed, I'll set up a topic about it =D

How long does it usually take to get a game going?

It depends... Rolling Eyes

If memory serves, there's been several beginner games recently announced or started. That might be where all beginners are currently busy. Twisted Evil

Yes, there have been beginner games started but even if we look at the enrollment for the forum, within the last two months we've had a dozen registrants, which likely are beginners...

Be patient, they will log in and see your announcement Smile
