Chaffsweeping.
I keep using a program called chaffmine or something to calculate the number of chaff needed. Usually i'm trying to sweep the last remainder of a field. it tends to be small (around 50-70 mines), yet the calculator always seemed to not work.
i always end up clearing the field without losing hardly any chaff; I keep having to watch slow battle reports, as well as worrying whether i will be accused of battleboard overload.
PS- isn't it more effective to send chaff past the planet for chaff-sweeping purposes? i forget, but i hven't been doing that since the program uses distance to center of field.

Chaffmine is an excellent tool & is accurate.
You've put your own finger on the problem - chaffmine assumes that the chaff will either go all the way thru the MF or the full distance at the warp speed you selected.
You probably know this already but, just in case, you need to arrange the fleet IDs so that all the chaff have lower IDs than do the warships you are seeking to protect.
Also, chaffmine provides the correct calculation based on an average result. IMO you would be wise to use about 10% more chaff than that calculated in case your luck is poor.

Don't you hate it when you're playing against some idiot that insists on having his minefields centred over his planets so that all your chaff sweeper end up at the destination. Much better when peeps make the centre of the field just off the planet so that the sweepers don't get in the damn way.
Just sayin' :D:D

Correct. typical chaff is either scout or FF with QJ5 & X-ray. Each piece of chaff that hits a mine does a given amount of damage to the MF as follows:
# mines mines destroyed
over 5000 1%
1000-5000 50
200-1000 5%
under 200 10
The tool http://starsautohost.org/files/ChaffMine.zip calculates the average # chaff needed.
The chaff should travel all the way thru the MF or the full warp distance (eg. if you select warp 9 the chaff should travel 81ly) for maximum MF damage (I thought that Chaffmine expected that but Micha says that the calc is to the centre of the MF).
Micha also pointed out that the warp used needs to match the distance traveled - eg. if you select warp 10 then distance should be 82-100ly, if you select warp 9 then distance should be 65-81ly, etc. I thank Micha for improving my knowledge on that one too.
One more thing: the chaff should have fleet IDs lower than the warships you seek to protect.

| Not to mention all the non-warships you seek to protect, too
Learnt that one the hard way.
