Hmmm,

How about a bit of an evaluation of the game, the game format, perhaps some events of interest from the game?

regards,

Fahrenheit (2)451; Small; Normal; 6 players; Distant; ABBs; STA; winner is the player in 1st place as of turn 2451

Shima is an IS HG race.

2400
My position is not great, but it could be worse. My race, the Shima, begin in the south-western corner very close to the edge of the universe. The name of the HW is Haig.

2404

I have not found even a single decent green planet. All the habitable ones I have found are under 30% PGR:/

2407
4.
There is a mini colony ship of the traders on my left side, so there is an HE nearby. Above them should be the Mossis, they are spreading around virtually as quickly as the HE. Maybe they are asking to be my target.

2412
3.
Traders shot two of my scouts down this turn. This induces me to think about a military action against them first. Mossis’ habs differ from mine, while some of Traders’ planets are habitable. Two of them (Cootie and Quixote) are approx. 240 l. y. to the right of my HW. Population on Quixote amounts to approx. 200,000, but Cootie seems to be a flag – another scout should provide me with the fresh data soon. My aim is to capture at least Cootie in 2420 and put up a gate there ASAP. In two years I shall discover w5. DDs with mini guns should be enough at this stage of the game.

Immortals sent a message to me. They are somewhere above me but not too close. In the message, they said that they want me not to colonise farther north than Ball Bearing (my northern planet), and in return they will not colonise anything farther to the south. It suits me for the nearest future at least.

Mossis deserve a warning for their colonization within my area. Dry Ball (which is green for me as well but only in 5%) will be pop-dropped just to attract Mossis attention to me. It seems as if the Traders have disturbed them a bit, and consequently they may forget about me :>

At last, 8 DDs, (Sawakaze) newly produced at Haig, are ready to depart for Cootie. Travel will take them 4 years, including one year with warp 10 (in open space) in order to surprise Traders (flight with warp 9 would take 2 turns in open space). One year after that, 11 MFs should reach Cootie and assault with 2310 troopers. Next turn, I should have up-to-date information on the Traders’ population at Cootie.

Mossis are WM –f. Dry Ball, that I seized this turn, only had mines remaining on the surface. Mossis are using Armed Probe scouts with w6 (one of them was shot down by my fort at Ball Bearing). BTW, I obtained w6 from Mossis (thanks).

2416
2.
Population on Cootie amounts to 58,000. Traders’ fleet of 20 mini colony ships left Quixote while loaded with something, and it is now headed north.

2418
2.
I am still in second, despite taking on board almost 200,000 colonists that are now en route to Cootie. My fleet consists of 8 Sawakaze, which will reach Cootie with warp 10 next turn, and of 11 MFs, that will spend one turn more in space. What should I research next? Maybe w8? Bazookas should be available in 2 years.

2420
2.
Cootie has been captured successfully. Before this, my 10 Sawakaze stood in battle against Traders’ fort armed with yakimoras and 7 DDs with betas. Only 3 Sawakaze survived the battle, which in practice means the end of their era. Now it is time for DDs with bazookas (Fubuki class). The first 10 of them will take part in an action against Oshun – another Traders planet. The plan is to take advantage of the success achieved at Cootie and strike somewhere completely different, for instance at Oshun. The funny thing is that I do not know its habitability, mineral concentrations, or population on the surface. I believe that 189,000 of my troopers will be enough to crash the Traders’ defence. IMO, the Traders will not be able to deploy a sufficient number of colonists to Oshun by then –since it is their most remote planet in the area. Furthermore, they lost Genoa, which is in between Oshun and the Traders’ HW.

1.
To reach Oshun my fleet needs to pass through open space for 2 years. A warning time of 2 years may be sufficient for the Traders to prepare a defence and to gather some warships. That is why my main fleet has to take a roundabout way in space and make the attack on Grape - another Trader planet close to Cootie – however, this means the flight is at maximum range due to fuel constraints. There will be no fuel to come back with.

2423
3.
Traders sent mini colony ships from Grape to engage my Fubuki, apparently in order to get know their design. Supposedly, Traders expected that the Fubuki were going to Grape, but meanwhile the Fubuki took a course to Oshun. Now, Fubuki are one year to Oshun. It may be too late for Traders to put up sufficient defence.

Traders attacked Cootie with 200,000 colonists, but all of them have been massacred by my troops. My losses amount to 60,000 colonists only. Traders also used 3 DDs with betas and 14 DDs with yokimoras. It seems as if entire Traders’ fleet was above Cootie, i.e. 151 ly from Oshun.

In the case of victory at Oshun, I will try to clean up Genoa, which belongs to Mossis. After that, my forces will require refuelling and reinforcement in order to move farther towards Grape and Cootie. For that purpose, I need fuel transports – next turn they will be available, possibly accompanied by colloidal phasers or deltas. Gates will have to wait a while.

2424
3.
Oshun is like my “Battle of Midway” Razz Wrong battle orders and a strong dock above Oshun contributed to the annihilation of my battle fleet. 10 Fubuki and 9 MFs with almost 190,000 colonists are down :/ Remaining 13 Fubuki in-between Haig and Oshun must stay idle waiting for another 16 that are set into production. After that, I will try attempt Oshun once again.

2425
4.
No space for expansion.

2426
5.
Soon another 30 Fubuki will be ready to strike at Oshun again.

2427
5.
Traders’ dock at Oshun looks serious. Traders moved 13 DDs on Yokimora to Oshun, which makes an attack with 30 Fubuki very risky. Along with DDs Traders might support Oshun with colonists or minerals which may serve them to put up defences. That is why I tend to change my plans and set out to Grape. This let me gather additional 12 Fubuki which follow my main fleet of 30 Fubuki. Meanwhile, these 30 Fubuki will try to destroy Traders’ fleet which guards Oshun. To avoid the dock Fubuki’s battle plans are set to disengage.

Unfortunately, Traders’ battle fleet flew from Oshun to Genoa, which appeared to be out of the range of Fubuki. Anyway, now I can proceed with the attack against Grape.

2429
4.
It is one year of travel to Grape. Action involves 42 Fubuki and 240,000 troops.

My next aim after Grape should be Quixote the planet 22ly from Cootie where bombers (17 m-70 mini bombers, Aichi D3A class) will be used for the first time.

2430
3.
Dock at Grape took down 22 Fubuki before my forces managed to destroy it. Assault reduced population on Grape to 5600. In 2 years Grape should be free of Traders. Need more Fubuki and gates to move them to Cootie immediately. Traders have w10!

2431
4.
Finally, I have gates. Need to put up them at my key planets immediately, in particular at Cootie. Battle fleet of Traders from Oshun is heading to Grape (5 beta DDs and 11 yokimora). I do not know the status at Chandresekhar (Traders HW) which is one year to Grape but supposedly Traders have something in reserve maybe new delta DDs. It is better to withdraw the fleet to Cootie.

2432
4.
As I thought, Traders deployed delta DDs, which could have massacred my Fubuki.

2433
4.
Mossis gave me C6 as a result of the battle between my Fubuki and their lone FF. This FF has mounted also wolverine shield – let’s hunt for another one.

Unfortunately, Grape put up a dock with deltas. My come back there have to wait. Currently, I have 40 Fubuki at Cootie. This turn I will send 30 more. Then I will try to capture Quixote.

Traders set out from Grape with the fleet consisting of 11 delta DDs, 11 yokimora, 5 beta, and numerous mini colonizers. It is now one year to Cootie. However, Traders do not know the current status at Cootie. They probably planned to send a mini colonizer with suicide mission to Cootie, but ccmaster probably made a mistake setting its speed too low. As a result, this mini colonizer is stuck in space in-between Grape and Cootie. Consequently, I doubt that they will hit Cootie blindly, but on the other hand, who knows? Anyway, I will try to intercept them, which may mean battle over Quixote or Grape if the Traders decide to turn back. Currently, I have 73 Fubuki and 26 Aichi D3A (mini bombers). BTW, Traders have begun producing M-80 mini bombers. Soon Traders may reach jihads and then I will be in retreat with my obsolete bazookas.

2435
4.
Traders’ fleet turned back to Quixote where my Fubuki destroyed them. As many as 36 Fubuki were lost, mostly because of a strong dock. As a result, Aichi D3A bombers killed approx. 250,000 colonists.

Now, my fleet will have to stay at Quixote for at least 2 years. As it stands, all MFs available in this area are unfortunately empty, so I need to send them back to Cootie so that they can load colonists in order to make an assault. Meanwhile, my bombers should reduce the number of defenders. I hope that my remaining 37 Fubuki can hold on at Quixote. Just in case, I will send an additional 23 Fubuki to Cootie, and set 21 more into production. Next turn I will start researching jihads.

2436
3.
Quixote is under bombardment. No base is in its orbit. No enemy warships nearby. Next turn the assault begins.

Traders supposedly have already reached w12. At Grape, they put up a Dock with a new, unknown design that replaces a strong dock with deltas. So why did the Traders change the design. Maybe they have just added shields/armor or they mounted jihad missiles. Even if they do not have jihads already, they will have them soon. I was going to research jihads, but I will not, mainly because it would take 4 years. By then, it would be the year 2440. After that, it would take one more year to produce jihad DDs and another 3 years to hit the nearest enemy planet. This would mean hitting somewhere in the year 2444, which may be too late to amount to anything. Instead, it is better to produce a number of chaff. In this year alone, I set 232 chaff into production, which is enough to let my Fubuki come up and open fire to jihad base. Maybe I will gain w12 from Traders.

2437
4.
Quixote is mine at last. It seems as if the Traders are in retreat. Oshun is under bombardment from the Mossis after the battle in which the Mossis met with Traders’ base and lost a number of warships. Now the Mossis have only 15 delta DDs, 5 beta DDs and 3 colloidal DDs at Oshun. Oshun appears to be green for me (44%). My forces from Quixote will be there in 2 years.

Mossis captured Oshun. Currently, there are only 15 delta DDs and 5 beta DDs of Mossis ships, along with their transport fleet. Next turn 81 Fubuki will visit Oshun, along with 26 bombers. At the same time, my MFs are setting out in order to reach Oshun in 3 years.

My 2 Fubuki acting up north shot down Mossis’ colloidal DD which let me obtain w10. I was waiting for that. At once, delta DDs - Kagero - are set into mass production. Who needs tech trading?

2439
4.
Oshun is almost mine. Eighty-one Fubuki destroyed 15 delta DDs, 5 beta DDs and a Mossis fort at Oshun, as well as destroying almost 200,000 colonists. Now I need to wait at Oshun for MFs loaded with troops.

Traders did reach jihads and now they are producing jihad DDs at mass scale. Grape and Chandresekhar alone produced 15 of them in this turn. Cootie and Quixote are in great danger since my Fubuki set out to Oshun, and it is impossible to send them back to Cootie. Only 18 Kagero DDs that were produced this turn are available, and all of them will be sent to Cootie along with chaff.

2440
4.
Next turn I should capture Oshun. At the same time, 18 Kagero will take off from Cootie towards Genoa in order to mislead the Mossis into believing that my next step will be a strike on Genoa. Kagero will return to Cootie next turn, but then my main battle fleet, i.e. 90 Fubuki that are now at Oshun, will hit 90210 – Mossis’ planet - 75 l. y. north from Oshun and very close to Mossis HW. I hope that the Traders will not attack me in the south in the meantime. They attacked this turn, but their jihad DDs were destroyed immediately. Thanks to them I have w11! There is also a risk that the Immortals will transfer their fleet to support the Mossis. That is my main concern currently.

Oshun was taken. Mossis are now producing warships on a large scale. In the area around Oshun Mossis keep 73 or so FFs, a number of DDs and even colloidal CCs. Now my attack against 90210 has to wait as it is too risky and failure there would mean my collapse. Fubuki need to be withdrawn for one year. Meanwhile, another 29 Fubuki, 20 sapper FFs – Mutsuki class, 5 Kagero will fly through the gate at Dry Spell. Hopefully the Mossis will not hit at Oshun this turn. After all, they may think that I am going to strike Genoa, and therefore send their fleet there.

Traders keep 18 jihad DDs at Grape, which are threatening Cootie and Quixote. However, I do not have enough ships to cover both planets at the same time, and thus I decided to defend only Cootie since it is much more important to me than Quixote because of the gate – Quixote does not have it.

2442
3.
Everything that could go wrong went wrong. Mossis retook Oshun. To capture it the Mossis used almost all of their available warships. My plan to attack 90210 would have been successful, as Mossis did not even strengthen their base. Now, the battle fleet of Mossis at Oshun (i.e. 76 FFs, 28 DDs and 7 CCs) acting as a whole outclasses my fleet, so there is no other solution apart from withdrawal to Dry Spell to wait for additional warships. The worst is that I am loosing the initiative to the Mossis.

At the same time, the Traders hit me at Quixote where they managed to take my fort down easily, which allowed their bombers to reduce the defenses (only 20,000 colonists died because of the bombardment). Quixote should hold for two more turns under bombardment. Meanwhile I need to move more warships to Cootie, particularly Kagero and chaff as the Traders use the blasters available at w12. Consequently, my Fubuki are virtually useless against them.

2443
3.
My position against Mossis becomes more and more difficult. Mossis’ fleet from Oshun followed my fleet and is now staying only 25ly from Dry Spell!!! Moreover, the Mossis are sending another 9 CCs from Genoa towards Dry Spell. I thought that Dry Spell would be secure from the Mossis and allow me to reinforce and maybe even set out towards the core planets of the Mossis. However, the Mossis unfortunately sent fast reconnaissance FF to Dry Spell, so now they may easily track my fleet at Dry Spell. Tests I made show that my fleet has no chance in the battle against Mossis’ fleet that is 25l.y. from Dry Spell if merged with the nine CCs that are following it. However, there is a chance to win against Mossis, but only in the battle where these 9 CCs are not involved.

Right now, the most important for me is to try to regain the initiative. For that purpose, the best goal is the HW of the Mossis (Hindsight), which is removed from Dry Spell by only 2 years at warp 9. This scenario is feasible, as I can set the course of my fleet so that I meet Mossis’s fleet (assuming that they follow my fleet) that is 25ly to Dry Spell while avoiding the 9 CCs that are heading to Dry Spell from Genoa. Of course, there is also the possibility that the Mossis will not follow my fleet but hit Dry Spell instead. That would cost me the gate at Dry Spell and cause problems with sending reinforcements. But, I will still have a better chance to hit core planets of Mossis than Mossis mine and this should make them return. Funnily, the Mossis did not take bombers with them to Dry Spell, so the bombers remain at Oshun.

Good news has arrived from the southern front. The Traders have withdrawn themselves from Quixote.

2444
4.
The Mossis returned to Oshun. My fleet is one year from their homeland. In its range are Hindsight, Bach and Sagittarius. Oshun has a fort with a gate, so the Mossis can transfer their fleet to any of them. But I assume that they will send their fleet to protect HW or Bach. Now I am going to hit Sagittarius. They may also follow my fleet, eschewing the gates. But Sagittarius is too far from Oshun to get there in a single year, unless the Mossis sets the speed to warp 10. What I need to do next will depend on the reaction of the Mossis this turn. Just in case, I will send my reserve warships (mainly from Ball Bearing and Cootie) to Dry Spell.

2445
3.
Sagittarius is under bombardment. Almost 500,000 colonists were killed. Supposedly, the main battle fleet of the Mossis is at Bach or Hindsight, so my next step may lead towards the southern planets of the Mossis. Meanwhile, it would be the best to meet reinforcements amounting to 26 Fubuki, 15 Mutsuki, 40 Kagero that have just arrived to Dry Spell. The merger will happen in the space between Dry Spell and Sagittarius, but at a point where the fleet stays in range of Bach, Sagittarius, 90210, Oshun, Kearny.

Mossis colonized Ditto – a planet in-between Haig and Dry Spell – which threatens Haig, Oregano, and Johnson (they are now two years from Dry Spell). Now, with my fleet in the north, it is impossible to mop up the Mossis from Ditto because they keep several CCs and new BC (colloidal) there.

2446
3.
Mossis sent their fleet consisting of 119 warships to intercept my battle fleet. Their fleet was annihilated, while my fleet lost 68 Fubuki and now amounts to 96 Fubuki (damaged in 23%), 40 Mutsuki, 45 Kagero, and a number of auxiliary ships. But now the Mossis’ core planets seem to be virtually unprotected, and thus, despite damages to the Fubuki, I decided to hit Bach this turn, which should let me keep the initiative.

Mossis moved 18 CCs and 1 BCs to Ditto. I see that their bombers are also in route to Ditto. Soon I may expect that these forces will make an attempt on my homeland. Thus, Hill, Oregano, and Johnson will produce defenses and mine layers. Additionally, in 2 years I should get jihads with which to protect these planets. Maybe the Mossis will consider turning their fleet back from Ditto in order to rescue their HW.

Bach under bombardment. 490,000 colonists died. The battle above Bach that took place beforehand claimed 22 CCs and BCs of the Mossis and as many as 56 of my Fubuki. Now only 40 Mutsuki and 45 Kagero are ready to continue the strike, since 40 Fubuki that survived the battle need to be repaired. They will not take part in the next action, which this time will take place at Hindsight – the HW of the Mossis! The Fubuki were ordered to meet reinforcements in space, i.e. 37 Fubuki and 18 Kagero, which are now sitting at Dry Spell.

18 CCs and 1 BCs of the Mossis left from Ditto, and are going back towards Bach and Hindsight. I will wait one more year. If they leave the area of Ditto and Oshun, my new M-80 mini bombers (Nakajima B5N), with a small escort, will hit Ditto soon.

Hindsight has been bombed. Bombs killed only 290,000 or so colonists, as the Mossis put up many defense installations, which stopped as much as 55% of bombs. Additionally, Mossis destroyed 11 Aichi D3A bombers, so only 28 of them threw bombs. However, beforehand my fleet was confronted by the Mossis’ CCs and BCs, not to mention the starbase. The Mossis’ forces were annihilated, while I lost 45 (all) Mutsuki and 11 Aichi D3A bombers.

At Hindsight there are now 500,000 colonists or so. I may assume that Hindsight is still capable of putting up a strong base. 18 Mossis’ CCs and BC that are returning from Ditto and will reach Hindsight this turn. Due to the above, I have decided to withdraw my Kagero and bombers from Hindsight and merge them with 77 Fubuki in space.

2449
3.
Nothing important to report. My main fleet, which is now in space, will strike Sagittarius once again. The second fleet, that is ready at Dry Spell, will attempt to capture Ditto.

early game: nice breeder nearby; expanding north and sw.

Find traders shortly..they appear to be dropping insufficient pop with their colonizers. I promptly popdrop them taking a tech in bio or something equally useless. They take it back in 2 turns using a massive popdrop. by then i have small battle fleets of yak destroyers out that i use to popdrop two more for one more tech (also useless).

expansion to the north is unfettered. in retrospect it appears that the player up there fielded a very poor race design. That also caused significant consternation to me later in the game due to the immortals basically having a free run to wipe out another player for space.

Obviously if i had known this earlier i would have focused expansion in that direction to get an edge. However, at the time i was still concerned about the war that was about to develop with the traders.

I quickly negotiated a NAP with the player to the west of me in order to be able to focus more of my forces south. however, i was careful not to redirect all my forces, since we weren't tech-trading or anything that might make him reliant on me.

war to the south went really well, as i understand it the traders had a lot of people after his territory. my territory at this point already consisted of about 1/3 of the map (around 2420), and i made some important victories in which chaff allowed me to take out the better armed traders for excellent tech gains. (i was fielding range 2 and range 3 frigates at the time). Conversion over to cruisers went slowly, and for the most part i had jihad cruisers or something for defense..i forget exactly.they were never used.

After taking a few more planets i started entering negotiations with all the players to figure out what was going on..after many an email, i had both found out what was going on in the south (kind of) and that the northern player had been mostly wiped out. I moved forces northward to support the player and prevent the rest of his territory from being wiped out. In exchange he gave me 4 levels of expensive low level techs (this over the course of many turns). The immortals chose not to make an issue over the current war (honestly they didn't have much of an option as the fleets they were currently hitting with were outdated compared to mine, and they needed time to consolidate territory), and agreed to a truce.

More turns passed, i took the time to start colonizing all the reds and throw up docks for point farming; also took another trader planet i think...Found out the immortals were feeding the traders tech..but it wasn't too big of a deal.

at this point i had a very large tech lead and knew that i would get battleships first. I figured the only thing that could hurt me was if i was packeted in the final turns, so i took the time to build up defenses/packet catchers on border worlds.

The rest of the game was mostly point farming by building battleships; my early battleships were jihads to make sure i had sufficient military force to prevent incursions on my territory; after that i started building point farm useless battleships with miniguns...the only major battles were with the traders..i think everyone decided to fight over second by now.

Anyways, i had concluded by 2440 that i had won, and after that didn't pay much attention to the game. Much thanks to soobie for designing my race for me to play. My own attempts at race design rarely go well..i get too lazy to read about or test a race.

edit: also thanks to soobie for lots of general game advice in all my games; now if only i had taken a decent race for reach..i basically had designed the race around rad shift right i think to use radrams...and then ended up remembering the game required centered habs..it was kinda last minute and so i recentered it and put points elsewhere, completely failing to realize that i would be left without a decent expansion engine unless i added IFE. So basically without engines that game is a flop; however, soobie also made my race for tempest 5..and while i have since concluded that i hate everything about HE, I do feel that the race is doing decently. tempest 6 has me fielding an AR race...which has been fun..if that's the word for it^^;

i still have almost no clue what i'm doing in hidden friends; I should probably ask soobie for more advice on it...i really have no clue what to do once i get past the jihad era.

Also, IS is really strong!!! Even after screwing up everything in that game, it didn't turn out nearly as bad as it should have. Econ potential for IS is quite high^^

edit 1: the only thing i dislike about my description is that it fails to express just how bad a target the traders were for me in terms of hab. An alliance between the traders and I against the Mossis made far more sense in the game, but based on his early messages, he didn't seem willing to let it go or forgive. By the time I started negotiating with him again, he asked for far more than i was willing to give. He seemed to think that he was still in a position to bargain. Honestly, if after that first popdrop he had asked for peace and a nap or even alliance, I would definitely have said yes.

edit 2: from the sound of it, it looks like the Mossis and Shima had the most fun in this game, getting to slug it out and have some decent battles.

You're welcome Wink Surprising no one else point farmed in the last few turns.

Also good to know that WM was a decent race choice for the game. Was a tad worried about that. And yes, it's eternally frustrating when someone wants to bargain when there doesn't seem to be much to bargain about Confused

edit:
I might add that the HE knightp is fielding was advised against as being labour intensive ... but he said he had lots of spare hours ... Wink

Indeed, I had a lot of fun in this game. Good pace, it was one of the fastest games I have ever taken part in. Great stance of all payers, no one dropped the game.

Knightpraetor was the master of point farming. But nothing replace you the pleasure of plowing someone's HW Laughing
