so what determines whether you get a battle report? a few times i have sent my scouts to places with starbases, yet nothing has happened. Is it because the starbase is empty? I checked to ensure that they were set to enemy, so i expected a battle to occur if it was there.

It depends on your and the owners battle settings....
if you have battle orders set to attack him...
or if he has battle orders set to attack you...

Then you will get a battle even if it is just a dance...

so if i sent a scout with orders:

target any disengage disengage, attack neutrals and enemies..to an enemy planet, and there was an empty space dock there, i would still get a battle report, right?

but i didn't get one last turn even though there was a starbase symbol on the map interface. It's weird. I assumed it was because the space dock was empty, but thinking about it now that doesn't make sense. I mean I had him set to enemy, so i would really like to know what happened.

Your scout would have needed a weapon on it to initiate a battle, if you don't have weapons on it then you can't start a fight. At least one armed ship needs to be involved, an unarmed scout and a starbase with no other ships should never initiate a battle.

oh, so those pointless dances i remember are from when there are freighters + a space dock. Good to know.

So basically i don't learn what space dock is there; and while as WM i see it on my design list i won't know which design it was?

Warmonger races learn the design of everything in their scanners. If the dock seems empty it might be because it actually is. Sherlock

You could also try the same kind of situation in a testbed, of course, and see what happens. Rolling Eyes

So many Stars, so few Missiles!

In space no one can hear you scheme! Deal

This is very true...until I have gates, and often after that most of my orbitals are empty unless I have a concrete need to arm them.
