I was hoping maybe someone else had experienced this problem, or could possibly help me debug it. Stars! is refusing to accept my serial #. I punch it in, and then it comes right back saying it's invalid. I've had the same serial (bought retail no less; still have my manual complete with the tweaked % symbols) for the last 11 years, hosted innumberable blitzes with it, and played hundreds of games. But at some point, apparently, something borked it but good. O_o
My system's an old Athlon XP 2200+ with 2.5 gigs of RAM and a set of 500 gig drives running Windows XP. I've tried using different versions of Stars!, all of them puke the same error (2.6jrc2, jrc3, jrc4, and 2.6i). I've tried downloading new versions from autohost just in case mine somehow got corrupted. stars.ini is writable and modifiable (I tried deleting it to see if that was the problem. No dice). My windows directory is the nice default c:\windows, so stars.ini puts itself there without complaint. I haven't tried using different serials due to lack of said different serials.
Anybody have any ideas?

You are using CAPITAL letters in your serial number I hope - Stars! is case sensitive that way.
One thing you can do is to change your sonfiguration in such a way that the machine hash becomes invalid. This will cause Stars! to ask for the serial number to write a new machine hash.
What have you done with your system that has caused Stars to start asking for the serial number again? Generally this happens when a drive is changed though the serial number you enter wouldn't be invalidated.

Capitalization does not affect my entry of a serial#...
I am using stars jrc4 under wine...
However, I have noted that if I start up the program with a usb drive mounted then the system "changes" which forces the serial prompt... then, of course, later it will reprompt again when the usb is not mounted {slightly annoying}
has your keyboard configuration changed?

les
