I'd just like to know if a Nubian with 8 deflector slots, 2 capacitors, 1 CPS and 1 AMP, is at all viable?

Cause it's REALLY CHEAP! Sure it's crap against missiles but it beat a serious and significantly more powerful and more expensive beamer design at 1:1 odds. So, anyone used something like this per chance?

I was just doing an experiment in absurd beamer design. I'm sure there's an ideal break point on deflectors, but I also recall someone saying that deflectors have no break point, or something like that. Feel free to contest any of this.

I've met a similar beast in a team game, though even more extreme, no eny caps but all deflectors, ... not sure if it had a shield but I think it did.
And you are right, our vanilla nub beamer force was no match to theirs, beamer damage done was very minimal ... They accompanied their beamers with (gate-able) arma CCs ... (They were IS+AR+CA, we were JoaT+SD+CA)

We still won that game (Penta) though ... not sure how, I do remember they went inactive at some point ... will have to look that up ...

Right, no break point like eny caps, every deflector added is as good as the previous.

A useful design is a nubian with lots and lots of deflectors, no caps, 2 slots AMP's and generally one slot CPS shields. It's even better when you have regen shields. Dirt cheap, hard to kill. I do generally use 2 slots of AMP's though. Of course, you need at least battle speed 2.25 for it to really be viable which often will mean a slot with some thrusters.

Though we often ask how and why, we must also do to get the answers to the questions.

IMO yes, but in very late game, where all minerals are scarce, and most cap-missile ships are gone. Even then I'd use the 2*3 AMPs without capacitors, since the bora is usually the most abundant mineral in that phase if the game, and doubling firepower always helps.

However assuming high deflection on both sides, battles among Nubs will tend to last several turns and chaff will likely be gone in the second round. This opens a window of usability for the 2*3 ARM with 3 Nexuses missile Nub design. It would cost 3 times iron and 2 times germ of "my" design, but I'd need only 7 such ships in a fleet to kill 2 of "my" nubs per round THROUGH shields, or 8 with shields gone. Shocked Since AMP beamers can't fire in the second round of the battle at ships on the last row, would be speed 2.5 ARM nub on disengage orders even deadlier. Shocked Shocked

In all games where I had Nubs, I ALWAYS had a significant number of missile nubs, just to prevent such dirt-cheap game-winning "tricks".

BR, Iztok

Sure, the old tried-and-true "asbestos-class" beamer nub. Twisted Evil

Cheap and nasty against most other beam nubs, just glorified chaff against missiles unless you also carry enough chaff (and the enemy doesn't have chaff-killers)... Whip

You should try different combos for firepower / cost, such as 1 Cap + 2 AMPs. HE races with Flux Caps have it even nicer. Teleport

As others have pointed out, it may lack firepower to finish off a well-deflectored enemy before battle ends, but still...

Edit: For an even "insaner" design against beamers, try 10 Defl + 2 Armageddons... Hit over head

There is no ideal Nubian design, you need to always consider the Nubians that you are facing and, if possible, counter design accordingly.

Most of the races that I encountered these days have RS. If a race built your "Strange Nubian", I would probably just build a standard general purpose Nubian: 2 shields, 2 deflectors, 3 AMPs, 3 Encap, 1 Jammer, and 1 thruster.

The problem with high deflector Nubians is their low firepower. They may not able to knock down RS shields before the battle ends and if they can't knock down those shields, then your missile ships will have little effect, etc.

But you say, the "strange" Nub is cheap. It is cheaper in the key mineral Germ (cheaper in res & other minerals too, but they are not bottlenecks). However, I don't think the savings in Germ is enough to overcome the weakness of a low-firepower Nub - just my opinion, you test it out in battle Smile

Doesn't what you put forward get owned by the stated, or 2 AMP 1 CPS 1 jet 8 def?

And then, on top of spending more minerals and resources, you'd lose so badly your head would roll. Rolling Eyes
