Question (I would have thought this would have already been asked, but a search on likely words didn't show it):

If you upload a .x where you have saved but without "save and submit", will autohost wait until the next forced gen time for the game instead of generating as soon as all players are in?

No, its a common mistake, not to submit... if all races are in and the game is set to gen when all races have submitted autohost will gen.

So, there's no way to unsubmit, to say "hold on, I need a couple of hours..."

No, don't submit until you are ready Smile

As donjon said the game will gen. A light green diamond means your turn is up, you can't unsubmit ... However you could ask Ron to delete your .x file which would turn the diamond "off".
I've done that a couple of times when I or one of the players when hosting a game submitted their turn twice or more too close to gen time. This because during a short period the new turn has already genned but AH still accepts your by then outdated new .x file, so after right after the gen the diamond will be light green ...

As a side note: some time ago there were some posts about this, suggesting that the AH page would have a check box so you could upload a turn for a "just in case". Instead of a check box it maybe could be possible to use a "saved" .x file to do that while a "save+submit" .x file would not hold the gen.

Hmm, I don't know how to determine (in the first 16 bytes of the .x file) if a .x file is 'save' or 'save+submit'.

You could start using the -t option I suppose, but it'd be much nicer if you could tell who's holding things up from the game page.

-t option? Don't remember what that one does... 'try/test' ?

from http://wiki.gible.net/index.php?title=Command_line_options

-t -- try, then exit. If you specify a player file, this opens the newly generated turn. If the turn hasn't been generated yet, then Stars! exits. If you specify a host file, this checks to see if all players have submitted their changes for the turn. If they have, Stars! generates the new turn and exits. Otherwise, it just exits.

Hmm, I don't know how to determine (in the first 16 bytes of the .x file) if a .x file is 'save' or 'save+submit'.

The old utility StarStat is supposed to be able to do just that. As it was written by the Jeffs themselves, I'd guess it'd be the right tool for the job. Cool

At one time it was hosted (source included) at AutoHost too, but I cannot find it here anymore. Sad

It is the first bit of the last byte in the first block.
Stars files start with the following
0-1 - Size of first block and type (16 bytes, type 8)
 2-5 - J3J3
 6-9 - Game ID
10-11 - Version
12-13 - Turn No
14-15 - Player No and encryption seed
16 - File Type
17 - Bit 0 (1) - Turn Submitted
Bit 1 (2) - Host is using file
        Bit 2 (4) - Multiple turns in .m file
        Bit 3 (8) - Game over
        Bit 4 (16)- Shareware Version
