I notice some people like to use privateers to colonize early game..is there really an advantage to that? i mean once the colony ships are used you can always makea new design like that later in the game if you wanted a transport/colonizer hybrid to save design slots.

I'm confused as to what the advantage is. I just use boosters with teh colony ships...is that better or worse overall?

and i know the privateer also deposits more minerals when it colonizes..but it seems more effective to just transport some minerals there than waste the excess resources. (unless of course you're trying to save G, but the posts i was reading were about -f races)

Hi!
IMO it's the question of fuel MM. A single PVT colonizer has more fuel as three scout boosters. So a player just "fires and forgets" it, and doesn't need to do the in-flight MM by splitting bosters from the fleet. Like everything in this universe this convinience comes with a cost of more "lost" resources and iron.

Also if you have rubbish prop techn (and no FM) a Colony Ship cant always go 1 w9 jump on its own -thus giving you the choice of delaying the whole colony mission 1 turn OR crash colonising with several ships.

The difference in cost between a Colony Ship and a PVT Col is about 2 scout boosters (and you need 3 boosters to get it the full 3 years at W9). So you only make a saving when you reuse the scouts (ie they boost something else).
When you include the cost of a PVT to take the colonists you need as well you make a loss (until the PVT has been used a few times).

So for -f you get convience at very little cost (say 15 res per planet colonised).

For factory races its a no brainer - less G and you save a few resources up front in return for not saving resources in future turns.

Interestingly when you have LFs and decent prop (and Ram scoops) - it suddenly pays to change back to Colony ships - because they can make a W9 jump and the majority of your transport will be in LFs anyway. However at this point you are starting to run out of ship slots (and new planets to colonise?) and the LF with a colony module becomes a popular choice. Also at this point an extra 100res to colonise a planet using a LF is a small % of your total resources.

so basically privateers are pretty viable if you're comparing them to scout boosters
