do destination stargates have no limitation on the gating? I notice the help file says that range is determined by source stargate..but what about size?

Range is determined by source stagate...
Weight limitations are determined by min(source, dest)

I think...

I am not sure of the formula but the weight you can safely send depends on both the sending and receiving gates capacity.

Playing with stars! calc, a 149kt ship sent from a 300/500 to a 100/250 takes 1% damage while a 148kt ship takes none.

I'm fairly sure that weight limit is min(source, destination) - it's as if both gates have the same lower limit.

While Stars! Calc is a generally excellent tool I don't trust it when it comes to Overgating. Damage stated may be correct? but it says eg. that a 300Kt ship gated from 300/500 to 100/250 over 2500ly has a 0% chance of losing ships to the ether (disappearing) which is definitely not true!

Right, don't trust Stars! Calc when it comes to overgating.

Now IIRC weight is determined by *both* gates, so a typical 377kT BB takes damage twice going through a 300/500 on both ends.

Correct that distance is determined by sending gate. One exception though when you are using the MT Jumpgate, it has no own limits so distance here is limited by the destination gate.

One other thing: There is also a physical limit. i.e. Stars will refuse to even attempt to gate a ship where the destination gate is > 5 x rated distance between the gates or if the ship weight is > 5 x rated weight for either gate.

Still a very good source, the Stars! Advanced and Technical FAQ v1.1, for overgating see:
