Hello all.

I found this game from somewhere and decided to try and start it up (it even starts in Linux/Wine [only the battle viewer thing makes it crash]!).
I used to play it in the past against AI, but never really went into tactics or details.

But I'm on my second game now and something made me wonder. Do starbases get extra range on torpedos? I once attacked a starbase that had range 4 torpedos with range-5 torpedos and the starbase was still able to hit me.

So, do starbases get one extra range? And what about beam weapons (base starbase designs only have beam weapons, that would be quite useless if they really had zero range.

Btw, I tried to find an active IRC channel but couldn't find any. So I guess there is none?

The crashing might have to do with the sound of the battles. Try launching the .exe with the -s -m paramaters.

Starbases do indeed get one extra range, for both torpedos as beams.

Well, with active users on the forum like this there is of course no need for an IRC channel! Thanks for your swift response, i delayed my playing a bit and now the answer came right in time. Smile

I'll try that sound hint next time h'm booted to Linux. But the popup windows is not even created, so it might not help.

About the sound, I noticed that in Windows XP every sound effects makes my music player stop for a moment. I guess windows just can't handle the 'depracated' sound handling of the program.

I've read about some user-initiatives like FreeStars and Nova. But I haven't tried (to download) anything like that yet. Is there any game (almost) as good as Stars! ?

Edit:
Oh cool, that sound trick worked indeed, thanks! I do miss it a bit though. Funny, since it's only some simple effects.

Anyway, went totally off topic here. Ie, thanks!
