Hello folks! Been playing Stars! For a while on the computer since 1994, and only recently found out that there is a message board here. Lots of good stuff to go through, and lots of ideas here for me to chew on, but I have a question to start, apologies if it has been covered before.

When I colonize a world, there is a chance I will find an artifact that gives me research tech resources. Does anyone know what the exact odds are of getting that tech boost, how much you get on average, and is it affected by any variables (habitability range, population dropped, pre-existing tech level, etc.)?

Basically I wanted to know if it might be economically viable at some point to go “fishing for tech” by building cheap colonizers, putting one hundred colonists each on them, and having them colonize nearby worlds. I guess you could also use this to “scout” planets to a limited extent, but the problems with that is 1 ship = 1 planet scouted, assuming it lands.

Still, I was thinking that if you have an HE race with Cheap Engines, there might be some viable way to build a bunch Spore Clouds and sent them out with some token colonists to get your research chance. If you get that chance each time you colonize a new planet, even if the colonists are all going to die because of habitability issues, there might be some overall benefit.

And if you try it with a tri-immune AR race, you could also have the awesome population efficiency of a 100 colonist world every time! Rolling Eyes

Hi!
From my experience I'd say there's a chance of about .33 to get the tech at colonizing.

I also remember reading an old article about gaining more points when colonizing with more pop. I can't confirm that: the usual amount of points I got was from 110 to 300, semingly not dependant of the amount of pop I used.

And yes, after the main colonization phase from my HW is at the end and before starting intense research, I usually colonize all the close reds with cheap colonizer for those small bonuses in tech, and to have a "free" scan on them. When I got surplus pop, I dump there ~50k of them, just to claim it for sure.

BR, Iztok

As i know you have to take at least 1000 Kolonists or you cant get an Artifakt .

Hmmm, a thousand colonists sounds a bit steep for what I was thinking of. By the time I get to the point where I can start spending colonists like that, I usually have better ways to spend them. A thousand colonists and a colony ship for a one in three chance at 100 to 300 research points? Back to the drawing board on that one.

Maybe if I build a fleet of cheap colonizers and a destroyer with a cargo pod, I can go from planet to planet, colonizing worlds for the tech chance, then picking my guys up and doing it at the next world…

But that does bring up another question. Does the chance of finding an artifact reset if you get booted off or otherwise leave a planet? Could another race find something on a planet I colonized, then left? Could I?

I assume that would not work for some reason, as you would then just build a bunch of cheap colony ships and cycle populations off your red planets for tiny tech advances.

Need to make a test bed…

Only the first guy to colonize gets a chance at the possible research bonus. There is no bonus if 'No Random Events' is checked.

Main race it benefits is HE with their cheap colonizers.

Hmm, if that's the case, I suppose you could build a couple of fleets of cheap colonizers and maybe a freighter, then have them go from planet to planet colonizing, collecting the population, then going to the next world to do it again. That way you deny the enemy those artifacts...

Meh, while it might be "worth" it in terms of how it looks on a spreadsheet, it probably isn't worth taking the time in a game away from other things. Shoot, thought I was hoping I was on to something.

The freighters would probably be recovering the minerals from colonisation, as well as the colonists. Early game minerals are scarce enough without leaving them behind.

I often use a variation of this, but instead of colonizing for just a few resources, I try and pop-drop for a whole tech level. Then I pickup my colonists with a freighter as well as *their* minerals.

But alas, It really only works as a tech *harvesting* technique against the AI, especially the HE race.

To benefit you must scout early, identify the HE, and colonize quickly in their direction.
