I fear that it is not possible.

To rephrase:

I have a fleet at the same location as another (a MT in this case). The MT did not accept my fleet, probably because I had to merge it with another fleet at the location of the MT (a slight planning error Razz ). So I need to follow the MT to catch it next turn. It travels at warp 10 so I can't hop in front of it or take a detour. In order to follow the MT I need to set it as waypoint, but it is at the same location as my fleet and I can't figure out how to set a waypoint there.

I tried setting an intermediary waypoint somewhere else, then back again, but the game deleted me second waypoint when I deleted the first even though it was set to the MT, not my own fleet.

The best I can come up with is zooming in and hoping to set a waypoint along the correct path in order to wind up in the same location as the MT.

In case of MT that's really not possible. But you can target with your fleet at the position of the MT another ship on some other location, and THAT ship targets MT. In the next turn that ship will intercept MT, your fleet will intercept the first ship, and trade will happen.

selecting another fleet as waypoint 0 will follow the fleet (use the blue diamond Iconian is talking about)

You can NOT follow MT this way. Doesn't work!

I can do that, but it doesn't give me a speed setting. And I need to set the speed to warp 10 to keep up with the MT. I'm pretty sure it won't work and I don't really want to test it in a pbem game.

It doesn't give you an speed setting because the speed will be "as fast as need be", fuel permitting, with Warp10 as max, even if it means risking failure of non-Warp10-safe engines, hitting minefields, or actually overshooting a "targeted" fleet who hit mines or had its engines fail. Shocked

As others have said, you cannot "follow" the MT. But then you don't actually need to. Just pick another fleet of yours, any will do, to target the MT (and actually meet him, preferably this turn) and have your freighters target that fleet. It will work. You can even testbed for it. Cool

That's a good idea, if you make very sure your ships actually travel 100ly (or preferably 100 plus a few fractional lys) along the very same path (or very very close) that the MT is following. If you fail to hit him you should be able to actually target him next turn and finally catch him. Twisted Evil

You're contradicting yourself. If selecting the MT as the current waypoint will follow it then there's no need to set a waypoint along the MT path.
Will this work?
Oh, and there's only fuel for one shot, not two.
And there is no other ship that can catch the MT in one turn.

The MT will absorb one fleet before fleet merge takes place.
So did your other fleet vanish ?

General question :-
You don't need to set a WP1 task when meeting the MT do you ?
Without having Stars in front of me it is difficult for me to envisage, a bit like riding a bike - you just do it.

My feeling is that you don't, the MT just grabs the heaviest fleet with a cargo hold from each player.
So back to your scenario, you must have lost another fleet at the same location ?

No, I did not. I gave fleet a the MT as a waypoint at warp 9 and I gave fleet b fleet a as a waypoint at warp 10. The MT refused both fleets without absorbing them, so they ended up as one fleet in the same location as the MT with a total of 5000 kt minerals intact. The merging must have happened after contact with the MT.

I tested it - and it did work. I then used it in the pbem - and it failed. Perhaps because I simply forgot to set correct waypoint? Or perhaps because it was moving at warp 10?

Oh well, In theory it should be possible.

It will NOT. Like Iztok already said twice: you cannot follow the MT this way. Other fleets: yes, MT: no.

If you don't have another fleet close enough that can target the MT for you (and you said you haven't) than you can use the Stars! Calculator to determine where the MT will be next turn. Get Stars! Calc, open the backup from previous year (you *do* keep backups, do you? Wink ) insert those coordinates and the ones from this year and you'll get the result for the following year.

Backups? I hadn't gotten around to setting that up. Done.
So now I know ehy it didn't work. Thx for the tip with the calculator. I do have it.

Ok.
Have you, by any chance, already met this particular MT ?

The MT doesn't care about things like merging fleets, or whether your fleet is big enough.
So there must be a reason it hasn't already absorbed your fleet.

He had two fleets arrive both with insufficient cargo. The fleets were merged (WP1 or by hand) and *then* the screenshot was made. Wink IOW the screenshot is not showing the fleet composition at the time of the MT meeting.

Does that make any difference ?
Doesn't the MT take the (largest) fleet and refuse to give you anything in return ?

If you show up with less than 5000kT you get a message like: "The MT refuess your captains an audiance because you did not bring enough minerals, try again next time".

No. I'm not suggesting nothing of the sort. Razz

Then forget about it unless you got a good trip calculator that can give you the exact coordinates of the MT. Assuming you recorded its past coordinates for, say, two or three turns. Confused

If you don't have a fleet of your own to target that you that can get to the MT, perhaps you have an ally who has a fleet who can do you the favor of targetting the MT. Then you could target your ally's fleet.

Or perhaps you can see someone else's MT trading fleet that is on target to meet the MT next turn and target that fleet.
