so my friends and I are playing our first MP game of Stars..and i'm pretty sure i could win just by superior tech trading...isn't tech trading in this game broken? Researching much is very little use compared to trading tech with a few people. It's so cheap to trade tech and i can't believe how high the % chance of trade is if you give them 20 ships and they just split them off adn scrap.

Anyways, can someone please explain to me how tech trading could be balanced in this game. I feel like it's nice for allies to get some benefit..but tech trading seems overpowered..if it was a max # of chances per turn instead of just max 1 tech per turn..then i could tolerate it..

but at this rate i feel like i'll win the game and still not appreciate the victory:\

Yes. Usually it is regulated by banning trade completely or allowing players to have only one ally at time (with whom to trade).

Tech trading is very widespread in games. As Kotk has pointed out, some games regulate it by stating only one ally. Other games ban it entirely.

However, since there is a cap of one tech level gain in a turn, everyone can make use of this.

Keep in mind that tech can also be gained from battles and invasions. Dropping troops on newly established colonies is an excellent way of gaining tech from opponents so, there are other ways to achieve tech advantages other than trading.

Having 2 or 3 allies doesn't really speed up tech trading so much due to the limitation of one tech level extra in a given turn. What it does tend to due though is tie up a lot of slots for scrappers.

Ideally, the best tech trading method is the pop drop method using 3 planets. This tends to keep allies vairly well balanced in tech levels.

Though we often ask how and why, we must also do to get the answers to the questions.

i've decided to limit it to one purposeful ship/event per turn. Hopefully that will limit its usefulness while still making it minorly profitable to have an ally in the long run..though even military support is enough for that

For me, much of Stars! play is diplomatic. Tech trading is a large component of diplomatic play. For that reason I usually avoid games with tech trading restrictions as they cripple more than just the tech trading.

Tech trading does reduce the amount that one has to spend on tech, but you do still have to have something, tech or otherwise, to trade. In addition, trading via scrappers (my preferred method) requires the existence of dedicated scrapper ship design(s) taking up ship slot(s).

Also, seeing the existence of such trading is valuable intel on the diplomatic landscape, intel that may be more difficult to gain in a timely manner.
