I started to work on the player relations object just to get something basic and functional working. It's not as deluxe as some of the ideas here, but it's more deluxe than the traditional "friend/neutral/enemy". Part of the reason I wanted to write my own Stars! was for a "share map knowledge" feature. It's a pain to write you own app just to compile all your team's information into one view. Smile

The battle sequences will be built and returned by the server, then viewed by the client.

As they have to be for both (or more) clients to display the same battle.
If battle were determined client-side then you'd get different numbers of casualties, which is not really a good idea.

This "declaration of diplomatic status" is also a red-herring.
It is more the battle plans that matter.
Both battle plans and diplomatic settings are largely deductible from watching a battle.
If someone attacks my ships I don't really care what he has me set as and I don't care what he has other people at the battle set to.
Whatever the combinations are they lead to my ships being attacked and I will take action.

Battles occur when a race with armed ships has orders to attack another race at the same location. As Mazda said, Enemy/Friend settings don't really matter, what does matter is that setting combined with the fleet settings. Once battle is started, each race determines who they want to shoot at by those orders, and any race being shot at by another race will shoot back.

IOW, if you have races A B and C at a location, and A and B have A, B, and C set to friends and to not attack, but C has A set to Neutral with orders to attack Neutrals, then C will shoot at A. A will return fire on C. One of the things I'm not entirely clear about is what B does. They could not even show up at the battle, show up but do nothing, or show up and join one side or the other. I think it depends on B's Friend/Enemy settings for both A and C, and the fleet orders.
