I'm not sure if its been noted before(I didn't know about it) but I just gained tech while losing a battle.

The battle involved 3 races, 2 fleets attacking my newly built spacedock. The dock managed to shoot down some enemy ships before getting pasted itself. I had no other ships present. I gained some tech. Very Happy

You had planetary population present. Wink

So many Stars, so few Missiles!

In space no one can hear you scheme! Deal

Correct. High tech salvage fell to the surface and you scientists immediately analyzed it!
BTW you were the _only_ one to have chance on tech. Nobody with ships in orbit would be able to learn from this battle ...

Eh? Really? I think one or both of the enemies could have gained tech...or is that completely false?

I have lost a battle with 2 MT lifeboats (an enemy and I met a MT at the same time), 1 got shot down, then the battle ran out of rounds, IIRC. Both me and my enemy got a tech out of the battle. Sounds like the same deal for the 3 way battle described. Only tech from the SB would not be gained. The other 2 enemies could learn from each others ships...if both had surviving ships.

I think they're saying its the presence of the planet with pop that restricts the tech gain chances - high tech scrap falls to the surface instead of floating in space to be recovered. This does raise the question however - if a battle occurs over my populated planet and I'm not involved(no ships or SB in orbit) do I have a chance(the only chance) to gain tech?

Indeed. If a battle occurs in orbit of an inhabited planet only the owner of that planet has a chance on tech.
This was part of the Starbase FAQ but I removed it since the fact that only the owner of the planet could get tech had nothing to do with the starbase. (You can still read about it here.)

Yes, you are the only one to have a chance to gain tech. You don't need anything in orbit, you're planet is the one "involved".

If the planet is uninhabitted, can anyone gain tech?

If the battle is in deep space and Player1 disengages after destroying a ship from Player2, can Player1 gain tech?

If a battle is at an uninhabitted planet and someone colonises it Waypoint 1, is he only one who can gain tech?

If after a battle at an inhabitted planet, the victor pop drop captures the planet, can he gain tech?

This woould be a typical wolf-lamb setup (except on a planet).

Shouldn't be a problem, right? I don't think battle orders are checked.

Battle happens before wp1 - it seems reasonable that the planet would not be colonized at that time.

He can certainly gain from the pop-drop, but probably not from the battle.

These are just guesses, but they seem consistent with Stars behavior. Cool

Even if it was player1 own (gift) ship with tech item and it died but some other player1 ship managed to flee then he has chance for tech.

Some ship of player has to survive at the battlesite. No need to participate in battle at all, have a ship at same year ar same spot where tech item is destroyed in battle and you get chance. Wink

Wow, I always thought you can gain tech in battle where high-tech ship is destroyed, and that is the only condition. No matter you win or lose. Rolling Eyes

I'm not sure. I remember a post where wolf lamb trading was attempted over a planet but no tech was gained. Maybe needs a testbed.
