Anyone have an idea how long it usually takes to get a game setup on autohost once you submit the generated game?
I hate to pester Ron but I wondered if my game had gotten lost in the email shuffle.
Than s

Generally it takes Ron around a week to set up the game. For the most part it depends on his 'real life' schedules. Autohost is a service he has been providing for many years to the player community at his own expense and in his free time. He has less free time to manage it now than before - especially since he and his wife have a new baby. Be patient - he will get the game set up for you. When did you send him the files?

Downtime? The server admin had some problems with the electricity going out quite a bit last year, but I think he's got a good UPS system in place now.
As the delays, yes, and I apologize for those.

There may be room for other hosts (and I think there are some other lesser known ones still around).
When I get time (and a more stable internet connection), I plan on putting up a system to host modded games as AH can't currently handle this.

Hmm, there used to be an Italian 'Autohost', but I don't know if its still around anymore. Actually, I don't know of any other hosting site for Stars games at the moment.
Over the years, several have asked for help in starting one, and I always point them to the same code base we (Andre, my co-host, and I) started with, but I don't know if any of them kept going or not.
As for hosting modded games, when VML was first being worked on, I said 'No' to hosting modded games on SAH, as I didn't know what the 'standard VML' would be. I didn't want lots of different VML .exe files, each with different settings, genning games on SAH.
These days, I say that if there is a standard modded game that people agree should be *the* standard, I'll host it. I just don't want confusion.

might it be easier to provide the current code base so that it can be just installed on a machine? with the original turnexchange codebase, there's still a lot to do.
i wondered actually, whether it would be possible to prepackage an autohost into VMware.

My thoughts were these: if I give them the same code I started with, and they put a lot of time into it and make something nice, then they are much more likely to stick with it (keep it going), than if I just gave out current code. Also, if people were willing to put a lot of work into as we did, then those new sites would be worthy competition, not just copy cats.
Andre and I put a lot of time and work into the current code base. We felt that if we simply gave it away, it would be hard to ensure that any new AH sites would stay around and not simply go away in a few months.
If I ever decide to totally quit hosting Stars! AutoHost, I will sell the domain name and hand over the current code to someone I trust to continue the legacy of Stars! AutoHost.
