Wumpus's tool for setting tech levels in .hst files got me thinking...

His post is here: http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=284 2&start=0&rid=326&S=943fb85a65d5577df9d8d956b637 a30a

Knowledge doesn't go forwards ALL the time, does it?

Idea 1: "The Leveller"
The Mystery Trader has decided to intervene in local affairs, to ensure plenty of races remain able to supply them with goods. Once each decade their subterfuges alter technological progress throughout the known universe. Fields chosen for each individual level gained/lost is chosen at random. Quantities lost could be something like the following:

Rank...levels
1st: -10
2nd: -6
3rd: -3
4th: -1
5th: +1
6th: +3
7th: +6
8th: +10

This could lead to some interesting turnarounds - the top player forgets how to make Nubians, and the bottom player unexpectedly learns to build ARMS Wink

The size of the modifiers should probably be based on the score 'spread' rather than the absolute ranking, so if races are close together this doesn't spread them out more, instead of bringing them together.

Could lead to some interesting strategies. It would probably be desirous to have fewer, but better planets. Aggregating score over several turns would be a slight administrative hassle for host, but would prevent most forms of score manipulation. Scrapping obselete warships could be a definate plus, so UR could be more viable. There'd probably need to be a ruling about uplifting pop as WP1 (which reduces score artificially, without effecting production.)

... I wonder what happens if you design nubs, then lose the tech? Can you still build them? If not, when you regain the tech can you continue building them? Worse still, I hope the design doesn't get deleted (that last one would be a 'deal breaker')

Interesting? Sherlock

Could be a good game for mixed skill levels as it handicaps the best performing races, and gives a foot up for the learners.

When doing a setup with "zero tech" and building nubs with high tech stuff I noticed that when using a normal .hst file (in which the races do not have such high tech) they keep the hulls but all items they could not have build disappear from the hull, and the engine turns into a QJ5 ...
I assume the same would happen here ...
