When it's ready for testing.

Freestars is a volunteer project, and as such it develops at it's own pace, depending on time commitment, level of interest and numbers of volunteers. The only way of speeding it up is to help in some way - which probably means coding at the moment, although documenting might be useful at some point. (Offering the developers large amounts of money might speed things up as well Laughing - I _am_ joking of course).

If you are not a coder there will eventually be way's you can help - eventually we will get to the point where we will have something that you can do something with, but isn't enough to play a full game with. Some non-developers who are willing to put in some careful testing and give constructive feedback might then be very useful.

Update: I've just read your post in the other forums, and it looks like your interest is in really wanting to play. Freestars is quite a while from being able to play full games with it. You'd be welcome if you find a way of helping Freestars along though Smile

No Freestars related project has published any packages ...so it means you got to use CVS to download the code like it is at moment from Sourceforge. Most are in C++ ... so VB skill you probably do not need. The ones i have bookmarked are:

"Freestars" server and client backbones (MS Visual Studio)are at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freestars

"GStars!" is separate freestars client project (crossplatform):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gstars

"My Own Stars" is separate freestars client project (Borland C++):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/myownstars

"Frontier Project" (i havent checked ... MS VC too?)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/frontierproject

Wow! A volunteer Smile

It's also worth looking through the FAQ (the sticky at the top). In particular, if you have IRC, the following might be useful:
Quote:

- I'd like to help, and I am willing to write code.

Great! We need help. join the #FreeStars channel on IRC and ask around.

- How do I connect to IRC?

To get to our IRC channel, use your favorite IRC client and connect to a server in the StarLink.Org group(e.g. Phoenix.AZ.US.StarLink.Org), and /join #FreeStars. If you don't know what IRC is or how to use it, go to http://www.mirc.com/irc.html and start reading; or find some other intro-to-IRC page. There are quite a few of them on the web, seeing as IRC is a quite popular medium.
Note, however, that several of us are connected to IRC 24/7, however, we cannot be at the computer for that time, so we might not be talking, or even present, when you join us. Try saying hi or similar, and we might respond; if no one responds, try again later.

Also from a private communication with LEit about what needs doing:
Quote:

Yes, a client is the biggest thing now, there are lots of things that need to be tested that are very hard without a client, and would be very easy with one.

However, there are some complex parts of the server that are not done yet. Battles is one area, and some one else is looking into that. Another big one is chasing splitting fleets: In other words, if you have fleets all targeting another players fleet, and that fleet splits up, which of your fleets follows which of theirs. There is some understandig of how Stars! does it now, but improving on that wouldn't be a bad thing.

As you are a new player, doing some of the complex engine (battle and following fleets) stuff is probably not the best place to start. If you are all interested in client writing (the one included with FreeStars might be a good place to start), that would probably be the most help.
