I'm not sure where it is, but I read a huge post on the newsgroup a while ago about how Stars! was designed.

Perhaps you can remember some key words to be used in a search? Very Happy

If it was half as ugly as "segmented programming" Yuck under M$-DOS, you didn't miss much. Though I wonder if the same kind of underhanded tricks could be used to circumvent the "magic" sizes... Wink

I'd bet there must be a way to tweak the clicks-to-grav formula to yield unambiguous values even after rounding. Trouble is, patching the beast in the binary might be quite difficult. Confused

Display (and calculate) them to 3 d.p. ?
e.g. 0.125, 0.128

"stars! visual c 1.5" gets you straight in the middle of the wanted thread at google groups.

Now that you mention it, that could be the best approach, provided the "extra" digits don't get cut off too early for the hack to succeed. Cool

I hope you can provide a more direct link, because I'm getting a "no match" with these keywords. Sad

There you go, all on one line, without spaces. This is the direct link to the thread.

http://groups.google.es/group/rec.games.computer.stars/brows e_thread/thread/21bdd60ed8706438/3df1958d670a95bb?lnk=st& ;q=stars!+visual+c+1.5&rnum=2&hl=es#3df1958d670a95bb

"Stars! visual c 1.5" were the search criteria you should have input in the search field of Google, but certainly AFTER selecting you wanted to search in GOOGLE GROUPS first. It would have showed the above thread as the second pick, the first in the rec.games.computer.stars thread. I thougt that should have been close enough a match.

Anyway, now you go straight. Be aware that the matter you search for is in scattered throughout the interventions in this thread that is named "Stars Supernova Genesis Beta".

Darn, you misled me with the quotes. Razz

Far easier to search for "Stars Supernova Genesis Beta". Laughing

Serves me well for not making the connection with one of the longest threads I've had the pleasure to contribute to. Wink

And if that's the thread with the most info about Stars!2 design, then there's not a whole lot of info on the subject, indeed. Confused

Yes of course, but then I would have needed to remember the name of the thread to begin with, and all I had in memory at once to help you with was that it had something in common with being programmed in version 1.5 of Microsoft Visual C. Call 555-1212 (Intergalactic Customer Care Department)

I did a quick check to make sure I was right, and gave you the exact criteria I used to get there at once.

Some interesting things that appear in the same thread about Stars! is that a guy has the complete source code of Stars! v.2? available and that an attempt was made at coding a v.3x.

Might interest somebody looking for code.

A bitpacked memory... Wink

And "exact" would be the operative word. The search only yields the result if made *without* the quotes. Wall Bash

I believe we quite exerted ourselves in that thread to coax Dueling the guy into producing at least a hint of that valuable source code. To no avail. Sad

But at least he's still coding v3.x. Very Happy

Yes, yes, yes "exact"! Dueling The quotes were mine to separate what was meant as an semantic unit to be put "as is" in the search field from the rest of the sentence, not yours to copy straightforward. If I had meant that, I would have doubled them to make it clear. Sherlock

Haven't got any chunks of mercy around, but will a pint of beer do the trick? Cheers
