Something I've been wondering - are Smart bombs good for anything? While they have the handy feature of keeping installations intact, they take forever to kill a planet.

If you have enough OAs to turn a planet red, smart bombs make sense, because defenses are them limited to 10.

Also, they make some sense for IS. Late game, IS often just drop 10mil pop on a world to take it, and don't worry about the losses. If you can smart bomb it to wipe out 25% of the pop on the ground first, that can save a fair amount of pop. Of course if you've got the pop bomb so big that any losses don't matter, then you don't need the smart bombs. Also, IS can't build smart bombs.

Yes, but they have diminishing returns. Adding a small amount will kill more population than without. Usually you want a seperate design so you don't over build them. The calculators are great for this.

Seriously, if you don't have really good smart bombs, it is often much faster to use packets, at least against non-dropped opponents.
