If a ship gets blown up in combat does it leave 45% of its minerals like scrapping would? Or is the rate lower.

It usually leaves 1/3. But with very low-cost ships sometimes it leaves more than the building costs of those ships were.

That would be due to miniturization affecting the build costs but not the wreckage yes?

Nope. If your ship costs 2 or less of every mineral then 1/3 of it is less than 1. So salvage left would be empty. It feels like stars is then putting random between 0 and 9 of each mineral there instead.

sod using extra slots...just using your normal basic chaff and sending them out against a handy chaff shredder fleet.

Indeed, I've seen that happen in one of my current games: ambush with a few beamers a few thousand enemy chaff which were traveling w/out escort, get more than expected battle debris, hardly enough to be significant, but intriguing. Sherlock

There is one salvage per battle. One per fleet will be if victims hit mine or are scrapped. It is neverthless quite boring MM to take that ~2700kT minerals out from these 200 salvages.

Yes - agreed,
I wouldn't be inclined to grant a game change of pace as a host when the player starts complaining that his turns are taking too long. Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

Though we often ask how and why, we must also do to get the answers to the questions.

would scrapping large amounts of chaff for minerals be considered cheating?

Sure ... its clearly unfair way to get minerals. Its up to playmates anyway. One time profit is low but the stacks of salvages are immediately discovered and it is hard to describe as not intentional. I think if someone objects against it then the scrapper has to stop. As punishment he gets Trash imago on diplomacy board. Very Happy

Btw genning amounts over 512 salvages or packets is the way to crash host. Other deep space objects are similarily limited like fleets but game engine code misses checks there.

This discussion so far assumes salvage in deep space, but what about battles over planets?
