I'm quite curious, what is your definition of a 'good' universe?

Where each player has two planets, within 81 ly of each other. Ideally no other players within 81 ly. Most important it should be FAIR if possible. If there is one race in range of 4 other races, then that race is doomed to failure. If possible I would like all players to have a roughly equal chance.

If you are just looking to place the HW stars correctly I can point you to some great tools for relocating worlds that would save you a lot of time. If you use a seed when generating the universe you can then rearrange the race order in the setup file so the HW stars pair up correctly on the x-axis; generate the game again; then use a tool to remap the locations on the y-axis.

I am doing it much the way you mention, and I am using a seed. I had thought about the tool that moves planets on the Y axis, and in the case I mentioned, it might work. I will check.

Please post the URL for that tool.

If you do it like this I don't think you need to generate more than one universe, or am I missing something...?

Because depending on the seed/arrangement, it might pack some of the players too close together.

It's a little fiddly to use, but you can manually move any world on the y-axis (and in some cases slightly on the x axis too, as long as it doesn't swap the x-axis order of the stars.) For example move one HW from south to north and another vice versa. Once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy.

There's no help file, so here's some basic instructions (I doubt you need them, but it might save you some time Wink )

Instructions:
- Gen one universe
- Document the x-axis locations and names of each HW
- Assign the races correctly according to x-axis location
- Regen with the new player order
- Load the xy file into uc
- Click 'change'
- Click '+'
- Select HW1 name, click 'ins'
- Select HW2 name, click 'ins'
- ...
- ...
- Click 'next', it'll now offer the first world for placement.
- Reposition all the HW on the y-axis to actually pair up the worlds.
- Done! Cool

I think you'll find it a lot easier (and more fun) than finding a universe that has balanced locations without tweaking. Cool

You could also use http://starsautohost.org/files/map2xy.zip.

The UI isn't as nice, but you can precicely place stars, UC can be off by a few ly. It can also change the names as well, only within the list of available names, and no two can have the same name. It still cannot change the order of stars, so shifting x coordinates is difficult.

There is no reason you can't use both as well, use the UC to get the positions close, and then map2xy to refine those and/or change names.

I want to drop a quick update to let you know where I am.... overall proceeding nicely IMHO.

Universe creator was a pain, and the y coordinates seemed to be opposite of Stars! (directional) but I eventually got it figured out.

At this point the dual HWs are done, I need to add passwords, generate one more turn, and then send the files to Ron. All Pop and mineral amounts and ships are at starting points.

Problems:
Due to the way I did the planet arrangement, some of the extras created with leftover RW points went to the wrong players. I adjusted the best I could, but there are a few small bonuses that a few players might notice.

The biggest problem is that I forgot to build defenses and a scanner on the second HW. The good point is that this is true for all players. If anyone has a problem with me continuing on despite this problem then let me know as soon as possible.

I should be able to finish tonight or tomorrow morning. I need to go fix dinner for the family now..

Well, setup is done, files sent to Ron, and the proper files sent to all the players as well.

Four players said no problem with the lack of scanners and defenses on the second planet. I did not hear from the other 4, so I proceeded.

I have learned a good amount about doing this type of setup now, so I am not likely to make mistakes like that in the future...

One player's race caused me problems. But I cannot say why for giving something away. I will be sure to post that when the game is over. Smile

A few asked my predictions. I would expect the first planet to be taken by 2440. I expect a winner by 2480. I have not looked at most of the race designs close enough to think about who might win. I did make a list of the PRTs present (yes, there is more than one PRT present...), and I am a bit surprised. I think it will be a very interesting game.

Please let me know (via email of course) if you change your password. I will stay on as assistant host with Micha, so let me know if there are any problems.

Enjoy!

Well, setup is done, files sent to Ron, and the proper files sent to all the players as well.

Thank you for doing the setup! Smile

Locking the topic, good luck to all players!

(Will split off the game views of the first TWW game later.)
