Who Needs Super Stealth?

Like the fish living in the darkest caves, your people have almost no ability to see what's happening around them. Although you have managed to build a scanner on your homeworld, you have no clue how to make that technology portable so that it can be mounted on ships. Still, you are ready to expand into space knowing full well that there may be others in the darkness who are also expanding and who might not care for your people. Let's hope they can't see you either....

Game Parameters

Up to 16 players will be allowed. Intermediate and Advanced skill players are welcome, so if you are a rookie then beware!

Map Size: Small for up to 8 players. Medium if 9 or more.
Density: Normal
Player Positions: Distant
Acelerated BBS Play enabled

Gens will be set to every 36 hours.

PRT Restrictions

JOAT, PP, SD, AR and IT will be banned because of inherant scanning technology.
CA allowed without TT
SS is allowed...but so what? ;c)

Other Restrictions and Rules

Players are allowed planetary scanners ONLY on their homeworld. If a players' homeworld is lost, then that player may build ONE planetary scanner on a different world. Players who 'accidently' build a planetary scanner on a second world must lift off the Pop from that world within 5 years and will not be allowed to recolonize it. Offenders names and the offending world information will be posted to the rest of the players via the Stars! messaging system. BE CAREFUL!
Players may use the BAT scanner on ships. No other 'normal' scanner will be allowed.

MT items that provide scanning will be allowed.

Chaff will be permitted, but no other cheats/exploits. If you are unsure, please ask.

Races may not take the LRT NAS.

The host will be playing and a third party moderator will occasionally be checking turns.

Race files need to be to me on or before May 15th, 2005. Slots are available on a first come - first served basis with players from The Core or from Locked in the Closet getting preferencial treatment.

All race files will be checked by a neutral third party.

Please direct all questions and comments to me here so that everyone can view them and reply.

Please send passworded race files to jaysmith@xprt.net

Is SD not also banned? They would have a huge advantage due to their minefield scanning ability.

How are you planning to enofrce the "no planetary scanners" rule? Will you have someone go through every turn to make sure?

Just wondering

That's easy. One needs just to load player's turn with scanner ranges turned on. More than one big red circle means more than one scanner. Later, when (or if) MT brings MPS, langston or MCM, then the checker will need to delete designs with those items first.

That's exactly what I was wondering. In the description it says that a neutral 3rd party will check the race files. But it looks like that same 3rd party will need full access to every turn as well. Scary Smile

But the game says that MT scanners are allowed? Or should that have read dis-allowed??

Would be a huge advantage for anyone managing to catch the MT!

Will you also permit moving a planetary scanner. e.g. lift pop from HW, then recolo and then build scanner elsewhere? Would be useful if my HW ends up in the corner Smile

Further questions:

- will PPS be on?
- what are the victory conditions
- will you consider random events off?

Just wondering what people think for this. Obviously NAS will be extremely useful. But then you lose penscanning completely (unless MT comes, in which case scanning is not a problem anyway since you can build enough scouts to cover the universe).

Just noticed one other thing on my first testbed. If you have elec expensive and +3 tech checked, you get default scanners on ships better than Bat scanners.

Can the initial ship be kept?

Can more of the same ships be built?

Okay, let me get several questions done at once.

NAS is banned - I just forgot to type it in. The description is now corrected.

Yes, you CAN use the MT items with scanners. The game paradym is that your race can't build them well. The MT obviously can.

No, the turns won't ALL be checked. However enough of them will that any 'mistakes' will be caught quickly.

If you start with a scanner that's better than a Bat, you'll have to scrap the ship with it and all designs that start with it.

If you evacuate your homeworld and do not recolonize it, you can put a scanner on a different world. However, lifting the pop off of your homeworld, placing a scanner on a world that is more strategically placed then recolonizing your homeworld will not be tolerated.

PPS will be off.
Random events will be on. (Because I like them Very Happy )
The victory conditions are Last Man Standing.

Thanks.

The latest post states that this is a last man standing game, what is the policy on in-game alliances? Can we assume that normal diplomatic overtures are allowed?

Sounds like a very...interesting...game. Talk about living life on the edge!

Thanks!

>Yes, you CAN use the MT items with scanners. The game paradym is that your race can't build them well. The MT obviously can.

So you can use say MT Lifeboat or items made (given) by MT, but you cannot build MT items, e.g. MCM with scanners?

>strategically placed then recolonizing your homeworld will not be tolerated.

eek. harsh. but i guess balanced out be being safe in the corner in the beginning Smile

>Random events will be on. (Because I like them Very Happy )

I like RE too Smile Although in this case it will be much more critical than normal games.

Actually I am going to allow all MT items to be used unless I get a concensus from the players stating that they wish it otherwise. This will be brought up to everyone involved as we get started.

Thanks everyone for the race files I've recieved. There's still plenty of room, so keep them coming!
