What's the current state of FreeStars? I just came across this project (I do read the newsgroup, but I normally don't read Autohost forums, and it wasn't mentioned on the NG IIRC), so I am trying to get some sort of overview.

I downloaded the server (but I couldn't get it to compile yet), and from my impression of the source code quite a few things seem already to be in place. Is it already possible to play a game, even if limited? What about the clients? I had a quick look a GStars, but it doesn't seem to be active any longer. Is there any other Client that would work on Linux?

Thanks for any info,

- Dirk

Hi!

I'd say Freestars is far from done, but is gathering momentum and some cool new calculations (fuel usage, planet value, RW points) might be added soon. Wink

As for a good client, phew, that's going to be a little more difficult. Confused But once the file exchange format is out and rolling, there should be a deluge of those. Twisted Evil

What clients are available at all? I know of GStars, and Hilton's windows client. Anything else? BTW, is Hilton's client on some web-page, so that maybe I can at least have a look at some screenshots?

I know only of those you mention. As for Hilton's, see 8 threads below this one, or in http://starsautohost.org/sahforum/index.php?t=msg&th=227 7&start=0&rid=625&S=a4f490b0edd12635c415ad92c999 dd8c

Well, I'm a rather strong magnet for client writers Smile Hilton is using my Graphics, although I'm not shure how far he is, But I think I've got a site link on my website. Another Client Writer though, has also contacted me. I'm not shure what he's gonna call his client but he's interested in doing fully rotatable 3D pics by using my 3D studio max models. Also adding the weapons and engines to the 3D model as you add them when designing a ship. As far as I know he's sill busy with the coding Smile

*Edit* Nope, I don't have Hiltons site's link on my site. I'll have to look through my e-mails. I'll post here once I find it.

The site was www.freestars.org, which is now down, as I am no longer writing a FreeStars! client and don't feel right keeping the domain. The domain is being donated to the FreeStars project.

I decided that I do not want to work within the limitations, or the speed, of the FreeStars project. As such, I am currently working on my own version of Stars. I may adapt it back to being a FreeStars client in the future, but for the moment I am disassociating myself with the project.

Agree... Current pace of freestars development doesn't impress... Seems like the project was set aside...

I did set it aside for a while, but am back on it now. It seems I need a FRP (Fantasy Role Playing) break every 2 years or so, but I'm over it so I should be good for a while now. I'm going to play some more Stars! so that will keep my interest, but eat into my time. There is also another client programmer that seems hopeful, if that doesn't work out (and maybe if it does) I'll have to shift to the cleint for a while - the server can't go forward much more without a semi-functional client to test it with.

I never claimed FreeStars would be quick, I knew it would take a while and have stops and starts. Even as I start on it again, I don't expect it to be done soon, and I make take breaks in the future. That's the nature of spare-time development.

It seems that because there is no turn generator there is nothing to test client with and because there is no client so theres nothing to test turn generator with. Sad

Maybe it helps if to split both these major works down into some more detailed (and clear) subtasks? Rolling Eyes

Thinking of that turn generator or that client ... it is not so hard to see that both have multitude of various separate elements and sub-steps that can be written more or less independently from each other. Actually there seems to be bit too lot of them for one man spare time. Nod Splitting the work up you can effectively use other programmers to help you. Not one-man development process anymore. Also the progress is more transparent when there is task list.

Yeah, absolutely agree. BTW it also could be usefull to create at least first simple client, and at least first simple server - mean they could at least work together and server could process several simple commands - this at least allow stars society to test first working version of server and client together (this is usual development practice to create simple one and then add new and new functionality - as you will never be able to do all development work without testing). BTW if somebody could split the tasks (for ex to simple C++ classes), I could try to help a bit. And I guess there will many other who could say: if I only have to write and test just one class - why a not if this helps ... Nod

One more suggestion on this: it could be usefull to split UI part of client from system part of client (for ex it could be several COM objects providing operations over fleets, planets, research, etc), then writing UI part become much more easier as when you have working object model you could use a lots possibilities to create UI without thinking of system part (for ex it could be Basic, C## and other who are better for writing UI than system part). Nod

PS: Sorry if I completly missed the point ... Embarassed ... just developer's view point
