Hi,
I was wondering.......Idea

Would it not be nice if there was a ship type called Map Quest or something..? This ship would have some tech requirements of course. Probably Con 5, Weap 5 and maybe energy 5....

What is the purpose of this ship???
Well this ship could be made by the person who wishes to share his map with another player. The player who wants to share his map (basically history) with another player make ships of this kind and transfers them to the other player.

The other player, the one who receives the ships then scraps them like normal scrappers with normal scrapping rules, ie, scrap on planet with starbase, need 5 - 7 ships min to *maybe* get the map info.....

Yes I know that they might as well just send them their m and h files along with the password. There is one little problem here, quite a few players use the same password for a lot of games and are not very willing to share their passwords...well that can be fixed by changing password..I know.... but this way, the player who scraps the ships will have the map info added to their history. So instead of opening another players files to view map info, he simply has the info already.

Well to add to this ships we could have an accuracy factor... as in the ships need not *always* give an accurate map reading... Twisted Evil. It could have a 50-50 chance or something of provide accurate or FALSE map info.... Smile So in other words, the player still has to go and scan those worlds to be sure..... Smile

Also these ships can be attacked by enemies and destroyed and therefore the enemy can aquire the map as well. The chance of the enemy getting it will have to be lower so as to compensate for the scrapping ie, Scrapping requires you to be on a planet with a starbase but destroying can happen anywhere. So a player might say let me be enemy for this turn and destroy the ships instead of being friend and getting the ships scrapped on a planet with a starbase that might be really far away....

Just an idea....

any thoughts....Smile
Regards
Dennis

Certainly something worth considering for the latter stages of the FreeStars project....

Instead of this specific purpose ship, however, considering that you have the possibility of gaining tech from defeated vessels.. how about a further possibility of also gaining the navigational data from that/those ship(s)?

Of course, this wouldn't contain the whole map scanned by a particular player, but just the planets which that particular ship had visited...

Nice... Cool

Yes that is a nice idea as well. I wonder how that could be achieved though. That would mean that data for each ship would have to be stored in hst file and could possibly make the hst file very big. Imagine, a record for every planet a ship visits or scans would have to be stored.

One way, I guess would be to store only 'x years' amount of data for each ship. Lets say 5 - 10 years. Maybe this would not make the hst file too big...

This can be fixed by decrypting .m? file and sending it with password removed.

Since history file is the same XML, adding info manually is a simplest task. I think some program to automate it can be written very quickly...

In Stars! we had to spend years to get into its files and write something of that kind. But we're having open-source project here and this makes a lot of things easier.

I intend to give people the ability uncompress/decrypt files and to also compress/encrypt them. With this you should be able to take your .m file, uncompress it, edit it as you want, and send it to an ally, who should be able to read it. I'm also hoping the clients can read multiple .m files and display everthing, you will need passwords for all the .m files you are looking at of course.

I love it, this means you'll be able to send misinformation - send mostly accurate info, but with a few subtle differences, like removing that 95% cloaked bomber fleet... Or adding one...

Trust no one!

good idea, it would also provide the means to create scenario type games.
A graphical interface for this, possibly independant of both server and client, would probably be needed to allow general use, IMO being able to edit .m files shouldn't be a required skill to play the game.
