I'd like to discuss buttons.
Yes, buttons.

I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere, so I thought I'd vomit my thoughts onto the screen here.

Has anybody else been annoyed, harried, confused or distressed when (some or all of) the Message Prev/Next/Goto buttons suddenly disappear? Without warning?? All by themselves????

Ok.. annoying though this is, this can be rectified by closing Stars! down, and starting from scratch. You reload the game and.. voila! Mr. Button and his two very close female button friends are once again displaying themselves for all to see.

On the other hand, I was playing an AR race in a game against AI's the other day, and my buttons in the Ship Design section started greying themselves out for no particular reason.

Twas starbases. I would make a few starbase designs, and then go back into ship design, and discover that the delete option was "greyed out". This was irrespective of whether or not these designs had been built or not. Possibly more to do with their positioning on the list of designs (nearer the bottom, more likely that it's deletable).

Has anybody come across this one before? ..and come up with a solution?

It's making my tiny mind hurt. Shocked

How many applications do you have running when this happens?

How long since the last time you rebooted?

Windows is notorious for "losing" memory... with applications requesting memory and then not properly returning the memory to the operating system.

I have run into the missing buttons problem ... never in hull design though... but then I don't play AR usually, and I know design 1 in there is greyed out so it might propogate by mistake.

Still, I think the proper solution would be a reboot of the machine, or at least closing down some of the other apps that you happen to have running "concurrently."

Well, it's possible that the missing Message buttons can be cured by a reboot... although closing down Stars!, and starting again negates the problem.

As for the starbase hulls...
I've since rebooted, and it's the same. Bah.
Maybe that's why I never usually play AR... Sad

ARs can't delete starbases that are built (some one is living in them). They may not be able to delete bases that are partially built too, I'm not sure. I know you said you checked that, but check it again.

I've seen the missing buttons, in single player games, it clears up if you gen a turn too, probably clears in multi-player games too, but those don't generally gen turns that often.

i've had the same problem. found that the buttons were actually resized. grabbing the divider and making the message window wider revealed the enlarged buttons.

There are at least three designs that are DEFINITELY defunct!

It wouldn't be a problem, but for the fact that I'm running out of slots!

Even if there are starbases in production or existing, you should still get the option to delete, and then it'll ask you if you're sure, because there are blah existing, and bleurgh in production queues...

So glad it isn't a "proper" game... Shocked

Execpt that you have colonists on them, and deleting them kills the colonists. Maybe if you unload the pop to 0 first it will let you delete an existing base, probably not however.

I've seen the missing buttons-bug myself, but rarely.
Another annoying bug that I encountered in my last game, was a bug in the Combat VCR, when I suddenly was not able to see missile movement anymore. Sad

I had one yesterday. A WM ship attacking an AI PP starbase. The battle was reported, but attempting to view the VCR crashed Stars.

That happens when you have the Stars! sound turned on and are running some other app that is using your sound card, like winamp for instance,

Maybe, but I use 2.6jrc4 so there's no sound. Strangely enough other VCR battles were OK in the same turn.

I have seen VCR crashing because i deleted one of the ship designs that participated in the battle.
Later i made new (different) ship design and then it didnt crash but displayed that new design at place of old one.
