Does anybody know which takes precedence, between Player Relations and Battle Orders?

ie, If you set somebody as a friend, but then set a fleet's orders to kill *everything*... what would happen?

Also, are there any other circumstances under which you might attack an ally? I was just involved in a situation where somebody I'd marked as "friend" was fired upon by my ships (whose battle orders were to attack only enemies). Confused

I'm wondering if this *could* be some kind of reaction to an inequality of Player Relation settings... ie he didn't set me to friend...? Even though I massacred 200 of his ships, it's still a worry I'd like resolved! Cool

Battle Orders take precendence.
You can attack anyone, even your friends - e.g. sweeping / tech trading.

In the cases where you attacked someone you didn't have orders to attack - like attack a friend when your orders are to attack only enemies - then it is likely he attacked you. e.g. he had orders to attack neutrals and enemies and he has you set to neutral.

There are more complicated scenarios where the battle engine has to decide which "side" a third party can support in the battle depending on all the player relations.

But I think we can safely say he didn't have you set to friend.
If he did then he must have had explicit orders to attack you !

That would make sense, I guess.

Looks like some sneaky f(r)iend needs a harsh lesson from Mr. Jihad.... Shocked

Very Happy

Was there a starbase present ?
I'm not sure of specifics, but bases can "start a fight" with their slightly different default orders.

There was an Ultrastation present, but that belonged to the acknowledged Axis of Evil, so shouldn't have kicked off anything on anybody else's behalf... Rolling Eyes

I think this was a (not so) straightforward mismatch of Player Relations... I'll probably have to wait until the end of the game to find out exactly what he was doing... Smile

IF there was a third party present it can occassionally cause some very odd situations to crop up.

Had a battle in the AOS game where my fleet destroyed a recently arrived allied colonization fleet (team game - we were all set mutually as friends). Said colonization fleet had just slogged 1200ly... to be shot down.

Apparent cause of the battle was some tricky order complication from another team's passing cruiser. It was a team we were "neutral" towards, but their orders must have been set oddly or our relations towards them were odd. Possibly a bug as well.

Axis of Evil ? Living up to their name then.
And what are the default battle orders of the Axis of Evil ?
Attack nobody ?

Oh.. the Axis of Evil are Evil Evil Evil...

They attack everybody.
Well, me and my ally, to be honest... Rolling Eyes

(we're the good guys! Really!)

What throws the random element into the mix is a third (and currently winning) party, who purports to have non-aggression pacts with most parties involved... although that appears not to be true! Crumbs! Yikes! Shocked
