Epoch of Darkness IV |

The ashes of prior epochs, have again risen from an epoch of darkness to reach for the stars. Cultures have evolved anew, and against all odds, multiple extinctions, and after the effective consolidation of all galactic resources under a past consortium between a hyper-expansive race and an expert mine layer, a long lived civilization expanded persisted for hundreds of generations. However, all good things must come to an end, and so did this civilization. The chaos that ensued, plunged the galaxy into a pre-technological murk for millions of years. New species and sentients evolved from the splintered surviving cultures on far-flung worlds. These cultures had diverged vastly from their past beginnings. Some still head tenuous local contact with other members. All these factious groups of fledgling cultures had one thing in common. They all were struggling to rise from the epoch of darkness, to reign the galaxy again....
Game format:
Solo or Team Game*
Skill levels: Mixed. Advanced players encouraged to play solo.
Anyone not advanced or better, encouraged to play as a 2-player team.
Number of players: 16
Universe size: Medium Normal Distant. (May be smaller if fewer than 16 players.)
Considering: Non Accel BBS start.(edit)
Victory: Solo victory or 2-player team victory. Rest of players must surrender.
Searching for as many advanced players as possible. Host is playing.
PRTs forbidden: CA (edit)
Universe size is up for debate, but aiming for UNDER 20 planets/player on average at start to keep MM down.
*This game will effectively have multiple skill levels. Since few truly advanced+ players exist anymore, those who have intermediate may join the game as a team. Those joining as teams are encouraged to work together to build mutually supporting race designs. Solo players may not coordinate with any other player before the game.
During the game. Any mix of solo+solo players may work together. ***Only 1 team OR 1 Solo player may win*** If a team member is destroyed, one player may either win solo, or may join with another originally teamed player who no longer has a teammate (thus forming a new team). Solo players or teams may ally with any player or team as convenience suits them. However, since only one Solo or Team may win, the best intelligence will be necessary to make sure no one slips away with too much power.
On universe size. If 16 players join, the universe will be medium normal. The universe size may be smaller if fewer players join. Do not send a race file until you are confirmed in the game.
Email me to reserve a spot in your game. Indicate whether you have a teammate or are looking for one. Indicate your approximate skill level and a brief description. DO NOT SEND A RACE FILE YET!! I will approve players. Game is hosted on Autohost. Will try to find a willing 3rd party host. Lacking that, I will host. Disputes will be decided by a vote of players. Missing a turn will not be grounds for a regen. Game will start after Sept 7th.
Other messy details....
Cheats allowed: Split fleets (too hard to police) and Chaff (Don't consider it a cheat.)
All other cheats...if you think it could be seen as a cheat, don't do it. If you're caught and it looks like a cheat, game will be placed on hold, meeting of all advanced players. Host will then fire a hyperspacial message to #stars! on IRC where he along with other veteran experts will decide the fate of the player in a closed military tribunal-esque manner, violating all relevant civil liberties. If guilty, the turn will be regenned, everyone will have a chance to replay the turn. The guilty party will be let off the hook with a single warning. Second violations will result in ejection upon review of expert panel and vote of players. An appeal may be made. in this case, the guilty party may be let off with a regen (but s/he will not be allowed to play the turn). 3rd offense is mandatory ejection, followed by public mocking, and finally poetry by Vorgons.

In my experience, to get a decent crop of advanced-expert players, you need to wait almost 2 months. Starting before the 7th is problematic for me. Any time thereafter is not.
As for a CA admin race, I'm not really interested in taking up valuable opponent positions w/ an admin race. As far as game concepts go, simple is almost always better. I may be up for a remap if I can find a 3rd party to do the setup. Maybe I can twist xdude's arm into doing it for me.
I had been wanting to try a universe remapped with 3 worlds in the center with victory conditions being to hold those 3 worlds (each would have to have a very different hab) for a total of 5 consecutive years to claim victory. (Sort of a retake on "reclaimation" run many years ago.)

Excellent. Thanks kang
I'll do the organization and player sorting (into recommending who should be on a team and trying to match players with those that would likely work best together). I'm basically out to create the most well balanced and competitive situation I can find.
Problem is, you'll probably be done with your next game by the time this gets started. Looks like all the really strong competitors just began new games recently. Maybe I can drag Asimov in from #stars! (since he seems to have taken up residence again).

Player List
1) Kang (depending on when this game ends--advanced+)
2) Ptolemy (Will Smith) (advanced+?)
3) (kraft_dinner_220) (beginner)
4) denis fauconnier (beginner)
5) "Steve" (Solo- High Intermediate, advanced, or expert presumably
6) Me, myself, and I (expert)
7) "daddison" (beginner -- may have his own teammate)
Still seeking players!!
Join!
Just occurred to me that this might actually be Epoch of Darkness V or VI....
Also. If not enough intermediate+ players join, and we have too many beginners, it may be best to allow beginners to have a CA on their team and allow up to 3 player teams for those who have less than 4 games against aggressive human players.

Team sizes have not been finalizes. Most likely going w/ the original plan of 2-player teams for beginners and intermediates w/ beginners.
Advanced and experts play as solo.
Still hoping to have a higher percentage of advanced players. Intermediate and lower players encouraged to seek out articles on team play (or consult me in this forum for strategy advice).
Universe size is not decided. That is depending on number of players. I will not start w/ fewer than 12, however.
Goal is to have 15-20 planets/player on average.
Small-packed, Medium-sparse, or medium-normal are options.
I'm leaning toward the first 2 options, and rather against the 3rd.

Ingmar Krenz --- 11 --- Interm. -
Bchoitz/Kang --- 12 --- Advanced+ May not play
H_About --- 13 --- Interm. +
Recommended that Intermediates pair w/ "beginner -"
Intermediates really have the choice of whether to play on a team or play solo if you want a real challenge. Intermediate - and below should have a teammate.
Before the game starts, all teams should have a chance to coordinate their race design.
This is not the final list of players, I'm going to repost, hoping to get 16 players. Medium normal may be an option in this case. (I suggest medium/normal or small/packed.)
Unless I have a 3rd party host, I will be doing no HW rearranging.

JUst thought I'd mention that the player list in that colour against a white background would be fine, but against a black background is extraordinarily hard to read.
