How are you guys getting on with duplicating the Stars! battle engine ?

There's a thread in one of the other areas about a battle simulator which got me playing around with trying to write one myself.

It seems to me that a Stars! battle simulator would share an awful lot of code with the FreeStars battle engine.

At the very least, it would be useful to have a repositary of information about the guts of the battle engine.

For example, right now I'm trying to figure out how beam weapon damage deteriorates with range. The manual says "10% pro-rated" then goes on to say a range 3, 100dp beam at range 2 would do 94 damage which is not consistant with that.

Maybe the manual means that beams do 100% damage at range 0 and 90% at max range (if it differs from range 0) rest of the ranges do something between 90% and 100%.

I believe it is close enough to reality.

Hmm, it is consistent.
At range 3 it does 90, at range 2 94 (93.3 rounded up), at range 1 it does 97 (96.6 rounded up), at range 0 it does 100.
