Greetings

I have sent Ron a Zip file of a utility I picked up a long time ago. It is a warship evaluator/battle simulator. It is a simple 1 ship vs 1 ship combat simulator, but is very handy for quick counterdesign testing. The results are not exact, but it is very close to what a regular battle would yield.

I am not the original author (it's freeware), so I make no claims or guarantees about the software. However, I can say I have been using it for at least 4 years with no issues. I have used it on Win 98/NT/2000/XP. It's straight forward on install and use, and the DAT file can be modded for VML games. See the readme for complete details.

Note - I have tried to contact the author, with no success. I'd love to get a hold of the original source code. So, if anyone knows this person, please drop me a hint.

Spam me if you have any other questions.

Yea, I doubt it would take much to fix it. Which is why I'd love to get the source code.

It comes close enough for none intuitive battles, though. All in all, good enough for players to better understand how componets change a design, without a lot of effort.

Once you understand how things work with the sim, you can fairly easily toss in another design in to the "1" ship (2 in 1), just to get an vague idea.

Nice program, thank you as well. Suspect all calculations of program could be built into a spreadsheet with advantage of easier at a glance to visualise.

I'm not so sure about that.

This thread got me thinking, so I've started trying to build a similar battle simulator. It is, as they say, a "non-trivial" task.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but does anyone have a current link to this utility? I lost the file, and would like to get it again.

Is there a way to use that tool via command line, or config file, or some other way?

It could be used for "evolutionary" find the best counter/battle plan to a given design...

(or test all possible counters if the calculation is fast enough)

I have a stack of 14 cruisers with 2 Pulsed Sappers in the nose. They move to range 3 and fire.

The warship evaluator tells me that they do 1673 damage to the enemy shields, but as far as I can tell it should be 2066 points.

Pulsed sapper does 82 dp.
There are 14 x 2 = 28 sappers, for a total of 2296 dp.

We are at range 3 (max range), so this should be reduced to 90%, for a total of 2066.4 dp.

The enemy is a stack of 10 BCCs with 240dp of shields each.

What is going on ?

On further investigation it seem that the warship evaluator is just plain wrong. The battle simulator (ie using the real battle engine) agrees with my figures, and gives a completely different outcome to the battle.

So be warned - don't rely too heavily on this utility.

After checking strange outcome of a simulated battle I realized the sim doesn't calculate ship movement right. A ship with 1.25 movement didn't move 2 squares in the first turn, but IIRC in third.
The warning is well in place.
