Settings: AccBBS on, PPS on
What effect do these have on a game?
|
AccBBS on = Acccelerated BBS play selected, has the effect that you start with more pop(but not more facs, mines, ships, techs) depending on your growth rate(e.g. 16% -> 105000 colonist in 2400).
If you never selected this option in your games so far, do some test with AccBBS on, it plays different the first few years, since you have to start around 2406-10 with exporting pop from HW, some race designs have problems with that(e.g.: pop effiency 1/2500 and construction expensive and start at tech3 not checked).
PPS on = Public Player score selected, has the effect that starting in 2420 the score page shows not only your own race, but every race even those you have not yet met. That way you always know number of planet, tech levels, armed ships and most important resources of others. Diplomacy is greatly influenced by that information(e.g. player x has nearly as much resources as rest of universe together, we have to attack him together, otherwise he will win certainly). It is also possible to derive info from others resources, tech levels and number of planets, but thats difficult and not reliable(e.g. Player has 20+ planets, 20+ techs but only 1500-2000 resources in 2420 => could be tri-immune Alternate Reality, they are only race to take so many planets so fast, acquire tech as well but produce relativ little resources per planet => good target to conquer, will become very dangerous after 2550).
To test those options yourself you have to start an advanced game.
On http://www.starsfaq.com/abbreviations.htm is a list with all common short words in stars.
You should have a look at the whole page http://www.starsfaq.com/ , lot of articles there. Especially look at http://www.starsfaq.com/articles/25k_by_2450.htm and try the race described there and compare it to the race you want to play. 25k at 2450 is no must in real game, but something like 10k in 2450 i think is what you should get at least, unless you do not play to win and do not want to stay long in game.

p.s.:never build small freighters, its like a big sign saying "newbie", always try to research medium freighters or, often better, privateers before shiping things around.

Well, after a very slow start we now have 3 players signed up, so waiting for a fourth before we get started.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind this. Could you explain why you think this would be a good idea ?

It's not a bad suggestion, but I think I'll stick with the basic idea.
With each planet counting the same, victory is quite obvious from the public score card - as will be each player's progression towards victory. If I change the scoring then it becomes much less transparent; not necessarily a bad thing, but something I'd like to avoid for the moment.
One of the main ideas for this game is the scoring is very simple, and it is also very obvious how to go about changing your own (or someone else's) score.
Hopefully this will be quite a quick game, and afterwards I may run another with slightly modified rules, taking into account what I learn the first time round.
