My previous record is 4.73 seconds, and I was hyperventilating after that.

The question that's been bugging me for a while is: does Ron ever plays Stars!? Laughing
I completely agree that Autohost is wonderful, and a great service to us all, but does he ever get to play this game that (I presume Razz ) he loves? If not, Sad he deserves even more credit than we give him. If so, what name does he use? I haven't seen a "Ron" playing in any game, which is what prompted this question.

I am comparitively new here. I vaguely remember stumbling over some clues in relation to your question on Ron, so remember I could be inaccurate.

I believe Ron used to play but hasn't for the last year or two (based on an post by him).

I also read this quote recently from long ago that might be Ron:

Seems like a good opportunity to say simply: thank you Ron. Smile

If it wasn't for this site I guess I never would have discovered the pleasure of muliplayer Stars! and would have uninstalled the game those few months ago when I decided to try it out again.

Yes, I like Stars!, used to play it a lot many years ago (when I started Stars! AutoHost in Mar-May of 1997) I havn't played a Stars! game for several years now, and never considered myself that good at it.

Stars! is very fun, but it suffers from one flaw IMO: "Bean-counters" have an advantage. Those that know the percentages/formulas for max pop-growth (only one example) have a big advantage IMO over other players.

To me, its unfortunate that Stars!, with its spread and depth of play, should allow those who religiously follow formulas and micro-manage their empires to have an advantage over other players who may have better strategies and/or diplomacy but not as much time to play their turns or the desire to micro-manage.

Now, MM is not bad, many people enjoy it. Knowing the game's inner workings isn't bad either. But the ideal strategy game IMO would not give an advantage to anyone based on their knowledge of how the game works.

Another reason I havn't played Stars! for such a long time is that I have an almost 3 year old son who I love playing with and spending time with.

Again, I love Stars!, and I'm glad that my hobby of running Stars! AutoHost can help keep the game alive and enable more people to enjoy playing it.

To the best of my knowledge, that is not from me. When I played Stars!, I usually played a JOAT.

Hi!
A bit late, but I feel I have to add some comments.

Well, true... BUT:
"Bean counters" have invested a lot of time to count beans. IMO they should be rewarded for that.
"Those that know..." have an advantage, but that advantage is relative: big to beginners, small to intermediates, none to experts. And most players with some experience have a decency to play in games at their respective levels of knowledge.
My my 2 cents.

Aye. And isn't that the beauty of the game? It's the depth that draws us back.

Chess gives an advantage to bean-counters also (knowledge of openings and end games.)

oh, and to get back on the topic for a moment: Thanks Ron! I was so surprised to find an active Stars! server so many years after the game's release. This says a lot about both you and the game itself. Very Happy

I'd also like to say thanks Ron. I played stars a long time ago, left for a few years, now I'm back in a couple games. Autohost has been the greatest way to play Stars IMO. Never a complaint about whether or not a turn was sent in because of the green diamond lighting up confirmed the submittal. Thanks again Ron, nobody could have done it better.
