I think I'll stick with a pre-defined list of names and randomly select them.

I plan to allow notes to be attachd to planets in my client - I just haven't planned on initially allowing them to be attached to fleets...

How about at least having several "themes" of planet names that the host can choose from? Maybe even being able to pick several, or all, if he so desires. Examples of themes including for instance normal Stars! planets, Greek, German town names, Quenya, Klingon, silly, scientific, etc.

Nah... One of the categories can be "Hyena's names", and/or they can be included in the other categories
Btw, see http://nukunuku.homeip.net/fsplanets/ ... Mostly just for fun, I made up a database and interface for FreeStars planet names, where you can add your own suggestions as you come up with them, and place them in one or more categories...
Since I have little to no imagination, I started out with the categories Alien gave, plus the one mentioned above(Hyena's), and added Hyena's list to the database... only in his own category for now, if someone better at categorizing than me could go through and add them to appropriate categories(adding more categories as needed), that would be nice.
I don't know if it will actually be used or not, but it's there anyway... Just in case.

If not renamed, it gets a default name from the list the game is assigned. It then updates to all the files next turn.

Ability for the host to name and arrange planets before game starts can be nice for hosting certain themed games from fantasy books.
OTOH ... naming things by players has been way to confuse others (and if possible the game engine) in any multiplayer games starting from muds. Example:
clip-clop ... West arrived from east riding the pack mule.
> examine West
You see mountains range in the western horizon.
> say cool name you got there, cant even look at you
You say "cool name you got there, cant even look at you".
West snickers softly. In Stars they surely name them something like: "7rYd 0zPe Ll1tMu DjAf UcKa5" or worse and turn the "cool" feature into pain. Im not saying Stars! is the 1337 gamers game, but there has been multiple threads about how to confuse others with ship design names.
Also such features need to be thinked very well. If you have not scanned them they are unnamed? Does not work. How you do the diplo then?
"The Crogs live at Cornhusk and control also the Oasis and Waterfall clusters ... but for you my dear these are probably Unnameds uhh, letme open that game see 1407,2096 .. 1274, 2013 and 1170,1936. Hopefully i didnt make typo."
Now if all players see the names right next turn after scanning (and maybe naming) by someone you will see all their HW-s (and secondary planets) at turn 1 and that is changing the game balance. Finally ... the freestars FAQ say it very nicely:
- I've got some nifty ideas for improvements, where do I submit them?
Right now, we've got more then enough to do. We hope to make the final version easily modifiable without a new exe for each version, so save your ideas.
