Wrong. Not whole point. Any game has the primary point of it ... and that is "to be fun to play". All other points are secondary. Sitting and growing economy while all the rest of the players are dropped out? Is it fun?

Oh well, I guess we won't be seeing you in the game then.

Edog, you have piqued my interest, so your post gets my 100th post on AH. You lucky edog! Wink

It's not the actual numbers that are important right now, although they will become more important as the game progresses. Instead, it is the type of game that Edog is promoting here. As someone has so generously pointed out, assuming 4k resources per planet, which is an HP econ through and through, it would take 250 planets to get a million-resource empire. Well, that's just not a viable goal for one race now is it? So Edog was looking to promote team play. I can hang with that. Of course, we can see right away that 4 such econ monster races would still require ~62-63 planets each to get that magic million-resource mark. So we have to bring the numbers down a notch to get them a bit more realistic and "attainable".

But remember, we are playing in a large, dense universe. This game will take a LONG time to finish. People will start dropping like flies around, say, 2520 or so from such things as boredom, entropy, the "I don't stand a chance, now" syndrome. Things like that. So actually reaching the million-resource mark will become a moot point, don't cha think?

But wait! There's more!

Tech level 26 in ALL catagories! Well, you've already got a team going now (you had better have a team or you're going to die! well...maybe you'll just wither on the vine.) So now you can work with your team and get those magic levels spread among the four of you. Tech level 26 in two catagories per team is possible, even if you have all expensive tech, within a reasonable time period. Better have that team. You better be researching instead of fighting, unless there is a clear-cut, strategic benefit to war.

Now, I gotta have 6 (count 'em - six!) discrete MT toys as a victory condition. There's going to be freighters zipping all over the place trying to run down those sneaky, fast MTs. Won't you love ruining their day when your cloaked BBs catch 'em without any escorts? Yeah, I knew you would. But I digress, no - actually I segway (sp?) into the next portion of the lecture.

RACE DESIGN!

Oh sure, everybody is either saying it has to be CA or you die, or everybody second-guesses their way into having 10 ARs in the game. That's the popular opinion. But who among us is popular? We're a bunch of clench-jawed, monomanic introverts who constantly think outside the box because ... well, we can't find the box, OK! But never mind about that! With this game, we can't run out a -f WM and beat everybody into submission and think we can win the game. Right? Of course I'm right. With my ego I can't afford to be wrong. Nor can you tweak your favorite HP JOAT and expect to win on econ alone. No way. Oh, well you could come close assuming no on opposes your expansion and everybody else is also playing a slow-growing HP race and that they play very non-aggressively. Yeah, you could manage it. But what are the odds of all that happening? Well, you better hope you ain't playing next door to me, brother, 'cause I love having HP's for lunch!

But I brag.

Forget the numbers! This is a good game of strategy, with enough elements of pure chance and blinding skill to make it worth while.

But what do I know? I voted Republican. Yes

As for the password thing. I trust you, but who am I? Do yourself a favor and find someone to hold the passwords for you. It'll save everyone a lot of grief later on, and you still have the ability to keep the game going when someone flies the coup.

I would not mind playing. I haven't played in over a year. But, I'm wondering how you are going to handle people taking vacations, having emergencies and such, because you know it's a gonna happen. If I play, it's a guaranteed event. I have a week in April already planned. Of course, if you already have a team in place there will be at least one person to take over for you, although someone else never plays it the way you would. But that's just a quibble on my part and not that important so why am I bothering you with these nonsense questions anyway. WTH

Your humble servant,
The Crusader Angel

There are two possible scenarios that I see for this game. Either the VCs are low enough to be attainable (by a team) while other viable races are still in the universe or they are so high that they are attainable only by first eliminating all/almost all of the competition. Those two scenarios require different strategies and therefore different race designs.

Edog, are the originally stated VCs firm or have you revised them in some way?

Thanks,
Ozone

I'm replying to several different posts here at once because I'm at the same time frugal and lazy.

At the suggestion of one whose opinion I value, I've lowered the resource requirement to 500k for a small universe (hopefully we won't have to deal with that eventuality) and 750k for a medium. Large universe size is still 1M resources. The other conditions (6 MT toys, max tech, up to 4 players on a team with unique PRTs) still apply.

Right now only 4 players have confirmed entry by submitting race files. Once I have a minimum of 8 I will find someone trustworthy who's not playing to hold passwords (those who sent me passwords should change them and resubmit the racefiles without). I'm still hoping for enough players to make for the Large universe (13+).

Holidays and vacations and such will be handled as they come up. The game will not be put on hold for one person. You'll just have to trust your team to handle things in your absence. For extended absences (and dropouts), replacement players will be found, and teams will have to take whomever they can get.

CAs are welcome in this game. So are IS, HE, AR, PP, SD, WM, IT, SS and JoaT. Every race can be a viable part of a team. Sure, the CA or JoaT is likely to be the resource anchor, but think about the benefits of each race in this type of game:

IS: Capture enemy worlds intact = more resources!
HE: Make use of early game expansion to create a stronger base for the team!
AR: Factories need germanium. Intercepting MTs will need ready access to lots of minerals. Who better for that?
PP: Rapid mineral transport across your team's territory, strategic terraforming, and the occasional W16 Dinosaur Killa!
SD: Imagine your team's entire territory saturated with three kinds of fun! Makes it tough for opponents to catch the elusive MTs...
WM: Hitting MT fleets will be like shooting skeet.
IT: Do you have to ask?
SS: MT fleets arriving empty or not at all...Planetary mineral reserves vanishing without a trace...it's the SS element.
JoaT: CA's humble country cousins could make a decent resource anchor for a team.

The point of this game is first and foremost to have fun and to win. The challenge is to do it by building a truly massive economy, the likes of which I have yet to see in a game in which I've participated. The VC meter in game setup allows up to 500k resources as a designated winning condition. Why have the number there if it's unattainable?

Plenty of room left in this one, kids. I know some of you are sitting on the fence. Don't be skeert. It'll be some fun!

This sounds like a lot of fun and I'd really like to join but I'm not shure if I should? I'm only participating in my first 2 games against humans!

Put me up as a reserve. If you need one more guy I'll be up for it.

I can see this being a big germanium contest.

I doubt there will be (m)any -f races submitted, so everyone will be building factories like mad. If (when) war breaks out, it will make sense to attack your opponent's economy, so taking out G shipments & remote miners and killing factories will be a priority.

The winners will not be the people with the biggest economy race design; they will be the people who manage to get the G mined and distributed most efficently, while losing as little of it to enemy attack as possible.

Also, I'm not sure that early progress will be that much of an indicator of eventual success. Growing fast at the start is important, of course, but it is _sustaining_ that growth that will bring victory. If your resource growth starts massive and then goes linear in the late 2400s then you may find yourself outclassed by someone who started slower but keeps ramping up.

So...everyone will build a nice slow HP, right ? But then you could interpret "slow initial growth" to mean "I'll beat up my HP neighbour quickly, with my HG race, and then grow my economy later".

In other games, you build your economy, race to a certain level of research (Arm BBs or AMP Nubs), build a load of those and then go beat up someone. If your economy is already way bigger than your opponent's then you might as well have a war instead.

In this game, you have to keep on building - assuming you are #1. If you are not on the #1 team then you need to do something to slow #1 down, while continuing to grow yourself.

And then again, what about teams containing a couple of resource monsters and a couple of warfighters. Now you can build and attack at the same time.

I'm talking myself round in circles here Shocked

I think I'll just admit that I don't know how it will play out Embarassed

Still only six confirmed players in this one. Come on people - this one should be a lot of fun. I'd prefer to have at least two more players but really need about 4-6 more. So those of you who aren't already playing in two or three on donjon's games should sign up!

Consider this the final call for players for It's The Economy Stupid. I only have six players now, which is not enough to run the game. If none of the rest of you are willing to step up and play, I'll either have to drastically alter the game to accomodate so few players or cancel it entirely. Come on, people! Stop lurking and start playing!

Agreed. I'm not in the mood for a 6 player game. Sorry, but I like more diplomacy in my games. More players=more diplomatic options.

6. Hyena (race file sent - please resend without including password- I will have a third party hold passwords)
7. OU_Fathead (race file needed)
