Has anyone given thought to how gravity is computed? I can't find it anywhere in the advanced technical FAQ. It ranges from .12g to 8.00g and it's definitely not linear. The other calculations are easy enough to normalize, but gravity is trickier.

Stars! most likely is keeping gravity and temperature in a simpler format on the back end (between 0.0f and 1.0f) and then converting the number values for the UI.

Any thoughts?

There are several apps that turn this into a number of 'ticks' from 1 to 99 (0 and 100 don't ever happen)

The one I would recommend looking at is Posey's spreadsheet. You can get a copy from http://www.starsfaq.com/ in the download section. You should probably also take a look at the rest of the site while you're there.

I've seen it generally done using a lookup table. Especially since a few of the low grav values repeat.

My "TeamTT8" spreadsheet (it's in the downloads here at Autohost) converts the habitat values to "number of clicks" like Leit mentioned earlier. (Mine is a bit goofy since it does it as number of clicks plus or minus from the center of the habitat range.) Confused

There are a number of habitat calculators about. I think they are all trying to implement the formula for planet habitat value from the Help files. My attempt is ponderous since it is trying to compare hab ranges from a number of races to determine who is best suited to occupy the planet. Complicated by the fact that they each can have separate terraforming capabilities.

P.S. - The spreadsheet is the successor to the earlier "Ugly_TT" version. I have discovered and fixed a few bugs in the earlier version besides expanding it to do comparison calculations for up to 8 races.

Sweet, thanks for the info. I knew there were a lot of utilities out there but I had never looked at the spreadsheets. Smile

I'm a little surprised no one has figured out the actual formula, I can't imagine that the Stars! devs used a lookup table to display UI information.

It's four lines stuck together.

e.g. between 50 and 75 clicks it goes from a value of 1.00 to 2.00 in a straight line.
From 75 to 100 it goes from 2.00 to 8.00 in a straight line.
From 0 to 50 clicks it is for some reason two non-straight lines.

Don't ask me why it was done like this !
