Maybe i am a little thick but why is the SD race feared as a rival in Multiplay?

I looked them over and they don't seem nearly as monsterish as some of the other like CA or IT.

Please let me see through my newbieness.

When played well, they can be a formidable enemy, particularly before cruisers, and then after they can seriously hamper movement.
Unfortunately the only way to understand what they can do to you is to face one.

Or play one Smile

Minefields explode after movement and before sweeping, allowing your ship to enter the field, and then being exploded before it can sweep the mines away. Requires much more work on your part, and on the part of the SD.
SD mines can be laid the same turn the ship moves, they do not need to be stationary to lay mines. It makes them much more difficult to target.

OK i guess i see that. But it doesn't look as scary as the SS with cloaked death fleets or PP flinging planet killers out of nowhere.

It just strikes me as something you would play when you want to be a pain, not something to strike fear into the hearts of your enemies...

Pain would be a correct expression when you are fighting a competent SD player. Wall Bash Requires a BIG amount of MM, so many players decide to turn to the other side and fight someone else. That "lay minefield on arrival" ability makes a big difference when attacking or defending, and exploding minefield kills all chaff and utility ships (freighters, scouts, SFXes, minelaying FFs, remote miners...) Shocked .
Besides, it is the cheapest PRT. Compared to others you can have 5-10% better economy just because of that. IMO it has three weaknesses: a minor one is it has to invest a bit more in bio to get the best minelayers. The second one is NRSE hurts them more because it decreases minelayers' mobility. The third one is less free ship slots, because there will always be two or three designs of minelayers.
Well, I forget to mention the biggest disadvantage of playing SD: to play it correctly you have to do a lot more MM too. Wink
BR, Iztok

Is there something more fearful than pain?

Its safe to say that competent SD can successfully attack and fight with militarily double stronger opponent.
SS can do the same but his planets are accessible for revenge. SD planets are quite difficult to reach.
