A frequent issue w/ people dropping or computer disasters is the loss of the H file.

It would be great if AH could archive all all H and M files. Thus any gen could be restored, and any player could retrieve the H file at any time.

A byproduct would be a tool like xborders could be used to give a slide show of the game without all the players doing the archiving.

.h history files are only saved on a players local computer. Stars! AutoHost does not have access to them.

AutoHost does save the last 5 .m files which the game host can use at any time to restore one of the previous 5 turns from backup.

Having AutoHost archive all .m files for all past turns is impractical, as in the late game .m files can grow to be over 2meg in size or more. AutoHost's hard drive space is not infinite.

It is a very good idea if players learn to make their own backups of their turn files. Stars! allows up to 99 backup directories, all it takes is a small edit in the stars.ini file.

Read your docs and the readme file. Cool

Ron:

Correct, the H files are only on the only be saved if AH open the files. And thus AH would need to know the stars! PW. However, since you need a PW for AH anyway - if you require them to be the same, you could open the files and create H files.

Good point on the size of M files, even though 2M is not as big as it used to be. Perhaps the 5 turns could be expanded, especially for the early turns.

I did read some AH docs, but it *was* many years ago. Smile

Its not practical for AutoHost to have to open every turn file. When you open a .m file, then quit, isn't a .x file automatically created? You wouldn't want AutoHost auto creating .x files for every .m file it opened, as they would overwrite the .x files the players had uploaded.

Besides, I have no need to know player turn passwords. Twisted Evil

But that only gets used when you are doing the genning yourself, IOW when you are the one with the host file. When you don't you'll need to make those backup directories yourself (and obviously can go far beyond 99).
Besides being able to recreate your .h file storing your .m files is a good idea for several other reasons.

Embarassed Oops, you're right... Stars! built-in backup function only works on the computer that is actually generating the turns.

Players need to make their own strategy for backing up their .m, .x , and .h files every turn.
