Astounding how much talk about galleons anf LFs there can be in a thread about FFs and DDs Smile

Anyway, I do sometimes use FFs in late game. Apart from that allready mentioned about sweeper DDs and sapper FFs (a mixed blessing btw), I sometimes build FFs as interceptors/countermeassure to sweeper DDs. The advantage of sweeper DDs have allready been described, but if your enemy sends a lot into your minefields, why build and use a lot of nubians killing them? Wastefull and bad tactics. Those nubians should be out killing real fleets somewhere and besides if the enemy suddenly escorts some of those sweepers, you'll be loosing a whole cap ship.

FF is lighter and has higher base init than a sweeper DD. So it'll work...for a while.

In a teamgame I played, we were bombarded by hundreds of such DD sweepers - unshielded and unarmoured. Then I built and dispatched hundreds of FFs with 1 HB - enough to fry any range 2 DD. Then they started shielding their sweepers. Then I started coupling mine in twos and threes. Then they added armour and range three beams to their sweeprs. Then I build a new interceptor with a DD hull an a torpedo. The MM was driving me insane, but it stalled them for a long time. Unfortunately in the end it was hopeless - they had an AR and we didn't.

...which brings me to another merit of DDs or FFs in lategame: cheaper for simpler tasks. Don't send a man to do a boys work, if you get what I mean Smile

The galleons was a legitimate aside brought into the discussion by Micha (I believe) wherein he countered one hypothetical use of FF's & DD's by saying he prefers to use the energy damper component on a design that need not be in each battle, such as a galleon colonizer (IIRC). But you can count on me to latch onto the "BTW" thingie, hijack the thread and go off on a tangent - I've just got an undisciplined mind, I guess. Embarassed

But while everyone else had already said everything there was to say on frigates and destroyers, the sideliner about galleons interested me.

I'M NOT AN EXPERT AND I'M OFTEN PROVEN WRONG. TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN YOU READ MY POSTS.
Math? Confused Ummm, sure! Nod I do FREESTYLE math.

Perfectly! In the current game (large sparse uni) I'm playing an HP IS and am fighting an advanced SD. I did quite a study of what sweeper would be the best for late game. Here are some designs:
1. DD as sweeper/light skirmisher: DD, Heavy Blaster, tech 14 sapper, AD-8 engine, tech-10 shield, organic armor, capacitor.
Pros: good sweeping and sapping, kills his sweepers with r-2 weapon.
Con's: mineral and res expensive, can't catch his 2.5 speed super-minelayers.
2. FF: single Heavy Blaster, 2 crobbys, FM.
Pros: quite cheap, kills his sweepers.
Con's: low speed, armor and fuel, bad skirmisher.
3. DD sweeper: 2 Gattling, 2 organic, tech-14 shield, TGSS-12 engine, OT.
Pros: durable, big sweeper.
Con's: mineral and res expensive, can't catch his 2.5 speed super-minelayers, can't kill his sweepers.
4. DD sweeper V2: 2 miniguns, crobby, FM.
Pros: dirt cheap, esp. germ; in pairs survives minehit.
Con's: who cares, it's throw-away design.

Since I couldn't catch his SMLs with any DD/FF design I decided to build just the cheapest sweeper, coupled with a CC skirmisher with 4 MegaDisruptors, 2 tech-21 sappers, 2 OTs, 2 tech-18 shields and TGSS-12 engine, that can catch his SMLs AND can escape most ships. Now I can combine both designs when sweeping: If he has not 2.5 speed R3 ships in defense I sweep with CCs at W-6, set to chicken. Else I throw close to the center of his heavy minefield a dozen of pairs of DDs. A half got destroyed, some are stopped in normal field, but about one third gets through and does its job. Big MM needed though Sad My advice: avoid war with SD, if you don't like MM.

BR, Iztok
