Since you get 70% of the resources returned from scrapping ship at a planet with a starbase....has anyone ever considered/investigated the effectiveness of a HP race building very expensive ships(res+ger) and scrapping then at developing planets with a fort to speed up factory production?

From the help file:

Ultimate Recycling

When you scrap a fleet at a starbase, you recover 90% of the minerals and 70% of the resources used to produce the fleet. The resources are available for use the next year. Scrapping at a planet gives you 45% of the minerals and 35% of the resources.

These resources are not strictly additive. The number a planet receives is determined by the formula:

(Current_production x Extra_resources) /
(Current_production + Extra_resources)

What this means, is that if you scrap a ship with a huge amount of resources at a world with a low amount, the most you can get is the lesser of the two. For example a ship worth 1000 resources is scrapped at a world with 10 resources: (10 x 1000) / (10 + 1000) = 10000/1010 = 9.9 resources. I'm not sure if it would round it up or down.

It also means if you scrap a ship that matches the worlds resources (10 in this case) you only get half of the ship value.

Hmm, plus there is the 50% factor, so a ship worth 1000 resources only gives 700 extra resrouces, so you really only get 7000/710 which is still 9.9. The case of a 10 resrouce ship however, is now only worth 4 resources.

A 60% penalty to resources is usually not worth it. It might be worth it for some special cases however.

Yes, that does speed up factory production. The trick is to have a couple different "scrapper" ship designs of different resource value (and the fewest minerals possible as well), or one cheap scrapper design and scrap different numbers of them, to try to match as closely as possible the resources of the target planet on a given turn. It involves a lot of thinking ahead. And an extra ship slot.

Now that I think about it, this sounds good for a HP, but a HG race will have more resources on a new planet initially, and this strategy may benefit them more.

Or an AR who wants to do a lot of terraforming quickly . . .

Hmmm, I remember seriously trying out a strategy like this with a HP CA I tried making (there's a wacky combo), but I never liked the result that much - mostly because the coordination to get the best benefit from this is hard to achieve.

What i must comment is that mare crisium puts it wrong that you get 70% resources somewhere. There also are no 60% penalty or 70% penalty or somesuch. What you *ALWAYS* get with the fort on orbit is the:

(Current_production x Extra_resources) /
(Current_production + Extra_resources)

and 90% of minerals.

If the scrap costs 10 times less than planetary resources are you get 90% resources from it. Wink The only case when you get 70% resources from UR is when your planet resources are 2.34 times bigger than ship cost.

Anyone can test it who does not believe me.

As for using it for boosting a planet... its very good idea, both for HP and HG... just do not forget that UR costs a fortune in RW.

I also do not see it good for AR, AR has no points in RW if it ever has points take TT, people. AR does not have minerals to build scrappers early and later does not really care, but TT might make wonders with AR late game. Wink
