1. What is the next number in this sequence?

2. Thomas, Richard, and Harcourt are quarrymen working on a castle. Part of their jobs entailed delivering large stone blocks to the worksite. Unfortunately, a river lay between the quarry and the worksite. They have a boat that can carry all three of them or two of them plus a stone block. It takes all three of them to load or unload a block, but it only takes one of them to row the boat across the river, loaded or not. How many times must the boat cross the river in order for them to bring all three men and four stone blocks from one side to the other?

3. McCarthy, the murder suspect, was being questioned by a police detective. "At 8 AM on Monday, March 4, 2003, you were drinking coffee in a rear booth in the Starbucks at the airport?"
"I was," confirmed McCarthy.
"And you didn't see the man in the booth across the aisle - not five feet from you - stabbed to death?"
"No, I was reading the local morning newspaper."
"The cashier remembers you. You were in an awful hurry. You gave her five dollars for a two dollar order and you didn't wait for your change."
"I had to catch a plane."
"You were aware of the time, but you didn't notice the man in the next booth was dead - with a knife sticking out of his chest?"
"I might have seen him, but I never looked directly at him. I was busy checking the New York Stock Exchange listings."
"How long did that take you?"
"A few minutes. Then I read the market news. There was a long article forecasting telecommunications prospects for next year. After I finished the article, I noticed the time. I had less than five minutes to get to the gate."
