Interest in new beginner/intermediate game |

Hi all
I'm thinking of hosting a new beginner/intermediate game (potentially called "Beginners with Battleships").
It would be a very basic setup (no themes, no pre-arranged teams), intended to allow people to get some experience of multi-player games.
I'm looking for players who can do quite well against AIs, but have little or no experience of multi-player games.
Anyone interested ?
Cheers
Staz

timmy wrote on Thu, 27 November 2003 01:50 | I've played perhaps 3-4 games of Stars!, but I stopped playing the game for 3 or 4 years. I'm just starting to play again now ... I've "finished" one game (ruined by cheaters) and have joined another. So I have yet to really play a full game. I'm not sure if I qualify as a beginner for this game, but if I do I'd like to play ... of course, first I'd like to know what the game parameters will be.

You seem to qualify as beginner/intermediate, anyway. The purpose of the game is to learn MultiPlayer strategy and politics.
As for game parameters, universe size would depend on number of players, but from what I've read about 40 planets per player is about right. Almost certainly AccBBS, probably not public scores. Victory would probably be by general concensus. I would be inclined to allow chaff and split fleets, but I think all other cheats would be banned. Host (me) would be playing, and I'd try to get an AutoHost slot before we start.
At the moment I'm just guaging demand; right now I've got 3 interested (including myself). If we get another then I'll post an announcement with confirmed parameters.

OK, the game "Beginners with Battleships" is now announced properly (with all parameters).
I've also posted it to the news group, and hopefully it will hit The List soon as well.
We'll give it a week and then get started.
I've specified "No CA" because I don't think beginners will learn as much from just watching a CA monster power to an economic victory.

been playing since 96? as solo.
Didnt know a web site existed for stars till just this weekend.
played one game against one opponent via email about 1990...till turn 108 or so.
i am definitely neophyte regards politics and multi-player gaming. I have never played any game of any type with more than 2 players...other than face to face WWII boardgames - World in Flames, Napoleonics, Columbia Block games etc. (4 player gaming)
There is much in the advertisement which i suspect slides by me.
"beginers with Battleships?" battleships. how does one START the game with battleships? what version is being played?
no "CA" ...means what?
AccBBS ... means what?
is now announced properly(with all parameters)...i'll bite. what does "announced properly" ...mean. Where/how might one see the "all parameters" ?
I suspect i need a private email to hold my hand with using the internet for communicating turns, sending/loading? race file, etc.
As to experience in the game, one must compare this to the competition. With a good starting position, high germ and a corner, i have beat(at least once) 8 tough and 1 expert computer AI. I am uncertain what that says of me.
My pet peeve in setting up a game is that all players start somewhat equil-distant from the center and that all players have a somewhat equivalent starting home planet with similar mineral efficiencies. I emailed Jeff McBride about this many moons ago, but he failed to understand my concern. I am uncertain if it was ever corrected. My only solution was to start the game several times until both players (all?) have a somewhat equal starting home world. This requires a 3rd party as moderator! unless the game setup design engine has been fixed ? has it?
I definitely prefer "public scores" and definitely NO random events.

yeah, i heard; there were some cheaters from Ottawa recently in the web. My problem is that i wont know i am cheating until someone identifies what i am doing is considered a cheat! A very clear email with all things considered a cheat needs to be clarified.
For beginners, one might post created race files and make commentary on the good and bad points about such race files.
oh, by way...I work/travel to work 630am - 700pm Ottawa Canada time - 5 days per week(Monday through Friday).

Mike, go to StarsFAQ
The acronyms are in the rgcs(rec.games.computer.stars) FAQ
But I recommend reading everything. Especially the articles.

Hi Mike,
First things first - Beginners with Battleships started a couple of weeks ago, sorry.
As for specifics, as has been suggested you should read the FAQs, but I have responded below
Quote: | how does one START the game with battleships?
|
We don't start with them, but we will get them eventually, and until the game is complete we are all still beginners
Quote: | what version is being played?
|
2.6J or 2.7J, RC3 or RC4 (RC=release candidate)
Quote: | no "CA" ...means what?
|
See FAQ
Quote: | AccBBS ... means what?

I posted it in the Game Annoucements forum. The parameters are in that post.

You sound about the level I was aiming at. Multi-player Stars! is a very different game to fighting the AIs, so from that point of view you are a beginner

All homeworlds are 100% habitable for the race in question, and they all have the same mineral concentrations. This is just how Stars! creates games.

Without public scores you have to estimate whether the guy you are at war with has a better economy or more warships than you - makes it more interesting in my view. And without random events you don't get the Mystery Trader.
