Man, I hope the site didn't go away. They had so much great Stars! stuff, like the old Stars-R-Us articles, the "Bugs and Features" list, etc.

Anybody know what's up? Did they move? I get the "404" error using this link:

http://www.starsfaq.com/index.htm

Shocked

If you drop the page and just go to
http://www.starsfaq.com/

you get something, not anything useful however.
So it's probably just a temporary glitch.

Maybe my ISP is a little slow in updating their DNS server, or something...

I'll try again later today...

Maybe it turn the wrong turn at Albuquerque...

<inside joke for AOS players>

- Kurt

<further explanation>
Mr. McGuigan lost some large amount of chaff (50K or so?) by accidently combining them and exceeding the 32K limit of a single design in a single fleet. Referred to in the later game history as the "Left turn at Albuquerque Incident".

Well I was still getting a 404...but I have a fix.

Find your hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host for Windows XP) and add the following line exactly as written:

212.15.82.2 www.starsfaq.com

That will fix the problem until they move StarsFAQ again Smile

Thanx to Sally for the IP address Smile

The site was working fine for me untill today, I checked when I saw the first postings here but nothing wrong at that time.
I tried the above fix but that doesn't work for me,

Well, I still can't get in, using any method.

I think Sinla is correct, James did maintain the site. I'll fire off an e-mail to him, and see what's up. I'll post his reply here...

In the mean time, does anybody know of another site that has a copy of the "bugs and features" list? I'll be starting another game soon, and I'ld like to have a link for the game description...

basically the site is down due to DNS issues. It will be sorted soon apparently.

This is the message James from Starsfaq posted on the newsgroup:

No the site is going to keep going, its currently a technical problem my
webhost changed their DNS servers (I was using the old DNS servernames) and
I called them up and they told me to update the DNS which I have just done.
So the site should be back up by the end of today/tomorrow (depending on the
speed of DNS propergation).

Also the hosting coincidently is up for renewal by tomorrow and the domain
itself for the end of the year, along with another domain and hosting
account (fixgov.org - the book titled "global solutions" has now been
published, though the site design isn't mine, I just maintain it).

So I've got my credit card to hand for that one (plus 3 other domain renews)
- the cost is not great in the grand scheme of things but does start
adding up when you start multiplying everything several times (the joys of
being an unpaid webdesigner).

The starsfaq.com site is due for a thorough redesign (it was my first
website design), but only when I can find the time to actually do it (so no
promises on when that might be).

Thanks for the update freakyboy and Micha. I did check the newsgroup before I started this thread, but it wasn't there then. I still haven't heard back from James. I wonder if his e-mail is also down, since he's using the starsfaq.com address...

And thanks for the link gible. I noticed that thread a while ago, but didn't realize that you update the top post. Do you mind if I copy/paste it to my web site?
