Hi all,
Right, I've got Stars installed on 3 machines in 3 locations with 2 different serial numbers...only problem is one of the machines has losts it's serial numbers... I cannot track down my box with my serial numbers, and the location I had them stored in Outlook was lost after I had to reset my profile.
Question is - can I burn the entire contents of C:STARS! to CD-R and paste the file onto the problem machine??

No, Stars! makes a machine signature of the computer it is installed on and even the addition of a drive to the machine will require the reentry of the serial number.
This is to stop the pirating of the software, which in a more critical light it could be said you are attempting to do. {I know better than that though}
regards,
donjon

OK here's your available options as I see it.
1. find your serial codes - recommended but fairly difficult.
2. Acquire a serial code by illegal methods - theft, law suit, prison - bad.
3. http://www.kolumbus.fi/tuomas.seijavuori/stars/ and purchase a code from this website. Tuomas also keeps a record of who you are and personal details and your serial code (i think). As such, if you lose yours, e-mail him, answer some questions - serial code recovery.
4. Cry.

Just a thought here - probably not feasable but a thought anyway - What about a database, held by someone like Tuomas or Jeff or Ron or some other trustable person that contains all our personal details + stars reg no. I know Tuomas has this system with his customers and he claims many people have benefited from it. Maybe he wouldn't mind helping some more people?
Just a thought.

Mangar wrote on Sat, 07 December 2002 17:22 | Yes! Some time ago I had a chat discussion about C64. A few days later we again met and all of us had downloaded C64 emulators and played his favourite game. (i.e. Elite, Mail order Monster, M.U.L.E., Summer Games, ...)
It is unbelievable how much good and innovative games came out that time. With new games now I sometimes think they are just going for better graphics but not at all for a good gameplay.

Elite is what caused me to find Stars!. I was searching for Elite or something similar and in my quest bumped into Stars! demo somewhere a few years ago. Back on topic... yes, serial numbers are very important. Write them everywhere, under your chair, on your monitor, on your palm... memorize them in reverse, in case you are victim of hypnosis. No you can't get them from any file, ini or race or history or any other, write them down, write them down, write them down... or you'll be sorry.
PS Don't just leave them on your hard drive in a folder. You'll be sorry.

No one backs up. No one needs to. Nothing ever goes wrong with their computer. Why should they back up.
Then bang, one day it all goes wrong.
After fixing the problem, wiping away the tears and having to re-install your entire digital life you start backing up.
Show me someone who was backing up from day 1 and he's a smart man. Show me someone who reads this and doesn't start backing up and he's a fool.

Say, so someone back up his copy of stars! and all of his precious races. His HD crashes and he reinstalls everything but, gasp, Word, Half Life, Office, Works, stars! and evrything else want the ID # thats only available on paper . Keep a .txt file on a CD-R/RW for saferkeeping. (Yeah you can rewrite on a CD-R you lose previous info's space but on .txt files thats not very much so it lasts a long time)
