Hey I think I found it. Using http://art.lathrop.com/stars/other/target.xls to get the figures right I managed to create chaff that would be ignored by beamers.

I used an Omega battleship with superlat (it's only a test, I'm not that dumb), overthruster, 3 jammer 20s, 3 nexus, complete phase shielding, and galaxy scoop.

Now I believe (not tested... yet) that the chaff design that will be ignored is a frigate with galaxy scoop, organic armour and a Yakimora light phaser. This brings the armour and boranium cost up enough to make it more attractive to missiles than the battleship, but less attractive to the beamers.

At least thats how I figured it.

You can design chaffe that beamers don't prefer to shoot at, however it is often easier and better to design your main ships around the chaffe (in terms of relative attractiveness levels) than go with an expensive chaffe design.

I've tried to make 'beamer chaffe', 'beam resistant chaffe' etc. before and found that while the relative attractiveness targets can be reached and you can do it, beams tend to be a lot less discriminating than missiles. Within a round or two you will likely find that the enemy beamers end up closer to your chaffe or have spare firepower and start pounding away anyway. When all was said and done it was more cost effective just to use a minimal amount of chaffe just to absorb missiles and design the most effective counter beamer I could and not worry about the chaffe.

ZZZyou have Beamers and Missles, you can design chaff easily
so that the enemy Beamers will target your Beamers, and the
enemy Missles will target your chaff.

Try a frig with the best shields you have. I cant remember the
exact design, but i think you needed to have at least en-10
shields... for missles this does not make a difference, as
only 45dP armor and shield are calculated, but for beamers
the frig suddenly has 200-300 armor/shields and has low boranium
costs... well... the exact calculation is too much for this...

But be careful to take the attr.-values not too close
(stars calculator), as costs differ with gaining tech...

also attractiveness changes when shields are down, so if the
enemy has sappers and lowers your chaffs shields, they are
also more attractive to beamers then...

so it is a nice trick, but it does not always work...

which i like much more is to give omegas or arms the
min-damage to self order, so they shoot at everything
with move greater than 1... and chaff never has speed
greater 1 (except WM chaff), and most enemy beamers
do have greater speed (2.25 usually).
this means that your omegas fire 1-2 turns at the enemy
beamers before chaff are in range of your omegas (arms).

can make a great difference...

ok.... thats enough for today...
