Possibility of a full circus is just too much to pass up plus have a bad taste in my mouth (peanut shells at least that's what I thought it was ) partially do to bad luck.

I'm interested in playing a game, but I'm not at the level of most of the players here.
- I think my last game was over a decade ago
- I've played about 3-4 games with other people.
- Never made it past about level 16 techs so the nubian fleets are foreign to me
- Not much good at optimising battle plans and out-tactic-ing others.
- Am more interested in a social game than spending the large amount of time involved in creating a parallel single-player game to simulate battles to 'ensure victory'.

Any chance we could start up a lower-level game someday?

Looks like the "fledgling admiral" games are aimed at that, but they seem to be on hold at the moment.
While this game picks up many of the players who were keen on the recent FA game that didn't quite make it off the ground, this game isn't just for newbies/intermediates so we've got plenty of veterans on board Smile

Just registering my interest anyway, I'll keep an eye out.

Maybe talk with game host and ask for release of game files with all possible players turn files (m and x if posssible) you could
then zoom on most effective players to see how they do things. But it would take a whille to resole this game.

Hm.. if that would be possible I would like to see this game this way too.

Some players will probably not like the idea of their files being open to inspection like that. In addition, somebody like Mr K will not really profit from the view over a good player's shoulder if he does not know the reasoning behind what is being done.

I think a mentorship system might be better. Since our host is already checking the races for sound construction, maybe somebody would like to go for an alliance with Mr K in the game itself and show him the ropes. That would mean a lot of communication though...

The big issue with turn files being released is that people often exchange email addresses via the in-game messaging system and publishing those isn't really kosher.

I have given some thought to releasing races when the game is finished and I make the Game Stories post, but I'd of course only do it with the consent of the designers. It's a fair way down the track in any case; I'd be surprised if we're done before Christmas.

In Plain Vanilla, I was extremely lucky to partner with someone who was willing to be that mentor. Prior to that game, I was in a VERY similar situation - an extreme beginner, having not played a game in many years, having only been soundly beaten even then. After my partner and I fared as well as we did in PV, Altruist (the host of FA) designated me an advanced beginner. We did that well, with my mentor's help. I think a partner/mentorship game, with experienced players paired with beginners, would be a VERY interesting game. This one probably cannot be this game, however.

There are enough people here, of different levels of experience, that I think any new player will have a chance of doing well. And consider this: with this game going, along with Little Eddie's side game at the same time, this community is unlikely to get another game going this year. It's entirely likely that your choices are this game, or nothing. And in many ways, this is the best way to become that experienced player.

I am willing to mentor someone in this game. I would consider myself an advanced player, though not an expert.

What this means to me: I would be willing to pull someone in now. Exchange email addresses, skype, discord, etc. We would discuss my race design. Once the game started I would have my mentee also receive the game turns, and I would explain my moves, design, strategy, etc. That person would also be BCC'd into email communications with other players, etc. The mentee would not have my upload password.

Probably a little boring from the mentee side, since that person is not actually playing, just watching.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Some good points above - and yes I agree it would be worth just joining a game like this - even if I end up part of the meat-grinder - we often learn most that way.

Have realised I'm probably going to be in a better position time-wise next year to join a game, so I'll look out for anything then.

ccmaster - you're welcome to the last seat at the table Smile

Raindancer - It would be great to see your perspective on the game. I have some questions from looking at GIF maps of old games too, so it would be good to have someone to run thoughts past.

ccmaster asked if battle orders could be set to whatever you want. I gave a qualified "yes", with the exception referring to the "Starbase Friendly Fire" mention in the OP (reproduced below for convenience).

Sure, but this game (with AccBBS off and CA handicapped) isn't the right one for doing that. Maybe you can make the game next year and make it "all races allowed". Smile

Since Stars.exe sets the standard "Default" battle order to "Attack Everyone", you might want to initially remind players to change it in order to comply with the rules.

I just tested it and the default's "Neutrals & Enemies". Were you maybe looking at a single-player game (where most of the diplomacy options are disabled)?
